Keywords: Students’ Perceptions, Online Reading Classes, Zoom Cloud Meeting This research presents the students’ perceptions of using a zoom cloud meeting application in online reading classes. Reading is an essential skill in language learning development, and it is compulsory to map EFL students reading learning and improve their reading comprehension skills. However, in the Pandemic era, learning and teaching have to be conducted online, in distance learning. In this virtual learning condition, the media is very important to make learning activities in the classroom run optimally with the help of technological innovation such as a zoom cloud meeting.
The research used a descriptive qualitative approach with a descriptive study as the research design. The subjects were 33 third-semester students of the English Department of UNISMA Malang. In investigating students’ perceptions, the researcher used online questionnaires and interviews as the instruments for collecting data.
The findings of this study showed the students’ perceptions of using a zoom cloud meeting application in taking online reading classes were positive in some aspects, such as enjoying to use, the interest, and challenge, the ease of understanding, and the benefits of using the Zoom Cloud application.
Unfortunately, the students’ perceptions in online reading classes were negatively related to the getting some troubles, such as bad internet connection and financial problems in buying internet quota data.
The researcher suggested the lecturers have to share more interesting materials conducted during online reading classes. The lecturers should also give dynamic methodological concepts to conduct the material which will be given to the students even though the situation was not a comforting figure because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, students must be more active and always motivate themselves to study hard even in online learning conditions. This research is expected to be useful for other researchers and also can be a reference or inspiration for future researchers who take interest in the field of students’ perceptions of using Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading classes.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides the background elements of the research. This chapter introduces the background of the study, the research problem, the objective of the study, the significance of the study, and the definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
Language is the most important thing to communicate something whether in spoken or in written form. According to Castillo (2015), one of the languages that are used in this world is English. In Indonesia, English becomes one of the subjects in the educational system. Teaching English as a foreign language is not easy as teaching English as a second because the students do not use it in their daily communication. Aji and Setiyadi (2020) show that in Indonesia, English is taught by discussing the grammatical norms of the language, and mistakes are constantly rectified in reading.
Reading is a crucial ability in language studying development, and students should learn reading and enhance their reading comprehension skills.
However, in the Pandemic era, learning and teaching have to be conducted online (conducted in distance learning) in particular reading classes. From that situation, the online learning system before 2020 was not as massive as it is today. Due to the pandemic situation, Indonesia's Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Anwar Makarim has stopped traditional teaching and learning activities for
educational institutions such as schools and universities are learning online from home via the e-learning media platform (Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education and Culture, 2020). It means that the learning activities are forced to be online or must be conducted by distance learning. Sampson and Zhao (2003) state that distance learning primarily refers to remote student independent learning, controlled by self-study textbooks, disconnected communication, and not by teachers.
To make learning and teaching reading effective, an English teacher should have a good character and have interesting learning media. Media is a tool that is used in achieving the target in learning. In this virtual learning condition, the role of the media is very important to make learning activities in the classroom run optimally. The media plays an essential role in the teaching and learning process. In general, the media's role is that of a message distributor (Yuhartanti et al., 2018). Media refers to using computers and the Internet to support reading education and learning using web-based learning, e-learning, computer-based learning, online learning, or virtual video conference learning. The most common way to do this is to name teaching methods using ICT (Information and
Communication Technology) (Yuhartanti et al., 2018).
One form of utilization of ICT can be implemented using audio-visual media. Audio-visual media is suitable to help the teacher to teach in online learning and can help students to understand the material clearly in distance learning. Citing to Fuady and Mutalib (2018), audio-visual media is one of the technologies that can provide messages in both audio and visual formats, which
may help and simplify learning. Fuady and Mutalib (2018) add that using audio- visual media is used as a mediator to deliver students' understandings, it must provide the effectiveness of the material explained by the teacher. So, providing learning and teaching in online reading classes must be conducted by various e- learning media platforms, such as Google Meet Apps, Google Classroom, WhatsApp Group, Zoom Cloud Meeting, and others. Moreover, students need adaptation to online reading classes.
Several researchers have conducted research related to this research. The first researcher was Alfadda & Mahdi (2021). The study was conducted to analyze the correlation between the variables of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) on using Zoom application in language learning, and to examine how gender and experience influence the use of technology. The results of the study showed that the students gave a positive correlation between the actual use of Zoom and the students’ attitudes and behavioral intention. The second was Ermawatti (2020).
The study showed that the applications used in online learning during the Covid 19 pandemic are efficient because they provide an alternative way to perform learning activities from home. In addition, almost all students surveyed have shown that the WhatsApp application is the most efficient, convenient, and economical application to use during a pandemic. The last study was conducted by Agung et al., (2020), the results of this study were three major barriers to conducting online learning, including the availability and sustainability of internet connections, the accessibility of educational media, and the compatibility of tools for accessing media.
From the available examples, the researcher believes that many perceptions would emerge, such as the pros and cons of changing the reading learning system, particularly in using online learning media applications. So, this study aims to determine the students' perceptions of using a Zoom Cloud Meeting application in online reading classes.
1.2 Research Problem
Based on the background of the study stated above, the research problem in this study is “What are the students’ perceptions of using a Zoom Cloud Meeting application in online reading classes?”.
1.3 The objective of the Study
This study aims to investigate the students’ perceptions of using a Zoom Cloud Meeting application in online reading classes.
1.4 Significances of the Study
This study is expected to give clear information about the students’
perceptions of using a Zoom Cloud Meeting application in online reading classes.
Besides, it also can complete previous theories related to the online learning activities for teaching and learning reading. The following are some of the potential benefits for students and teachers.
a. For the teachers
It is expected that this study can give valuable information for the teachers in teaching reading during online classes by Zoom Cloud Meeting. Amidst the Covid-19 outbreak, the teachers can use online learning platforms and online
media learning in the teaching and learning reading process since they cannot meet the students face to face directly in the classroom. Afterward from the perceptions of the students, the lecturers can observe the level of students understanding when they study reading through online learning platforms.
Moreover, lectures also can improve the way of teaching in online learning.
b. For the students
It is also expected that this study can give valuable information to the students in using Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading activities so that the students can learn reading effectively from home without face to face directly in the classroom. Students also have the advantage that teachers know the use of the zoom cloud conference application. It is very useful for them since they are still able to develop their knowledge during distance learning.
1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study
In this study, the subject is the third-semester students of the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Islam Malang. Furthermore, the researcher limited the problem mainly to explore the perceptions of the students in using a Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading classes activities amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the researcher cannot conduct face-to-face interviews, so the researcher decides to use Zoom Cloud Meeting as the interactive online media. So, the researcher provides an online questionnaire and interview as the research instruments for collecting the data which are adapted from the previous study by the expert.
1.6 The Definition of Key Terms
To avoid misunderstanding the research paper, the researcher wants to define some key terms as follows.
a. Student’ Perception
Students’ perception is a psychological capacity to process and interpret an occurrence that has been or has occurred. In this study, their perception is shown in the response to the questionnaire given about the students’ perceptions of using a Zoom Cloud Meeting application in online reading classes.
b. Zoom Cloud Meeting Application
One of the learning media is a Zoom Cloud Meeting application. Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video.
c. Online reading classes
The term online reading classes in this study refers to the activity in the reading class during distance learning. Online reading classes mean that the learning process uses online media applications. In this study, the online media learning is Zoom Cloud Meeting which is conducted online with the use of the Internet.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
This chapter presents the conclusions and suggestions of the research. The conclusions were composed of research findings and discussions, while
suggestions came up with some ideas which were addressed to English teachers, students, and future researchers who take interest in the field of students’
perceptions about the use of Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading classes.
5.1. Conclusion
Based on the results of the study, the researcher concluded that most students had positive perceptions or agree of using Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading classes based on several aspects, such as enjoying of used, the interest, and challenge, the ease in understanding, the benefits of using the Zoom Cloud application. Most students enjoy learning online reading using a Zoom Cloud Meeting so that the student could conduct the learning reading well. The findings of this current study, it is contrasted with the previous study conducted by Agung et al., that their study found three main obstacles in conducting online learning such as availability and sustainability of Internet connection, accessibility of teaching media, and the compatibility of tools to access the media.
However, in this current study the researcher found that some of the students said that during the online reading classes using Zoom Cloud Meeting, it did not work as expected. Students said that online reading classes were getting some troubles, such as bad Internet connection and financial problems in buying
Internet quota data. They also felt that traditional or face-to-face learning systems were better than learning to read in a zoom cloud conference because face-to-face learning systems give them a better understanding.
5.2. Suggestions
Finally, the suggestions of this research came up with some ideas addressed to English lecturers and future researchers as follows:
5.2.1 English Lecturer
The teachers have to share more interesting materials conducted during online reading classes. The lecturers should also give dynamic methodological concepts to conduct the material which will be given to the students even though the situation was not a comforting figure because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
5.2.2 English Students
Students must be more active and always motivate themselves to study hard even though in online learning conditions, particularly in online reading classes.
Students also have to be aware that behind online learning activities there are many benefits that can be obtained, one of them is the challenge in the all-digital era where all activities, especially learning can be conducted by online.
5.2.3 Future Researchers
This research is expected to be useful for other researchers and also can be a reference or inspiration for future researchers who take interest in the field of students’ perceptions of using Zoom Cloud Meeting in online reading classes. In the next research, to verify the results clearer and more detailed, future researchers can use more instruments and participants in data collection.
