In the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Queen Mary, we meet with the name of Lewis Owen as Deputy Chamberlain and Exchequer Baron of North Wales, and High Sheriff of the county. Perhaps the dormant seeds of early learning that had sat in his mind under the roof of the humble parsonage were now beginning to live. While his mind was undergoing this great change, events occurred in the government of the university which were apt to put his religious principle to the test, and, as it were, to try it by fire.

They know that since the foundation of the world, he has never suffered, nor ever will, that in anything the will of creatures should be the measure of his honor, or Nothing is more certain than that some of the treasures the most precious in our religious literature have thus come out of it. The most earnest efforts were made by Owen to discover the name of the preacher who had thus been to him "as an angel of God," but without success.

HIS PASTORATE

Not long after moving to Fordham he was married to a lady named Rooks. This period of Owen's early pastorates appears to have been one of the happiest of his life. It is quite true that the great object of the book is to prove that Christ died only for the elect; and.

At the end of the ten weeks' siege, of which Owen describes himself as a. He may have regarded the death of Charles as the last resource of a long-tried patience,—the decision of the question, Who shall perish. This dark element, it is the mother of the lightnings and the splendor; it is very sure that?”.

HIS VICE-CHANCELLORSHIP

Believing, therefore, in his graciously promised presence, according to the condition of the time and the opportunity which, through divine Providence, we have received. It had been the custom for the Fellows to preach in turn on Lord's Day afternoon at St. Ch., and vice-chancellor of the university, was then (he was in London.) grad. doc.

Twisse of Newbury, prolocutor of the Westminster Assembly, in his "Vindicice Gratiae, Potestatis, ac Providentiae divinae." We do not wonder that the future expositor of Hebrews should have been strongly encouraged. Even Goodwin, with all his lush eloquence, is sadly crushed when seized by the mailed hand of the great Puritan.

Hammond the authenticity of the letters of Ignatius and to consider the evidence which would be given on their supposition. And yet, in order to properly assess Owen, we must consider all the specific elements of the case. In the debates that took place over this part of the instrument, its language was interpreted as recommending toleration only to those who agreed to it.

The lawyers saw nothing in the admission of the Jews as contrary to the laws of England, some of the merchants did. In the midst of these public events Owen's pen had once more been turned to authorship by the immediate command of the Council of State. How much of the secret of error in religion is discovered in the following advice: “Beware of Satan's snare by affecting eminence by singularity.

Owen's work is a noble illustration of the gospel method of sanctification, as we believe it to be a living reflection of his own. But events began to unfold in the political world that were to bring Owen's tenure as vice chancellor to a swift end. As for you gentlemen of the university, be happy and well.”.

HIS RETIREMENT AND LAST DAYS

The amalgamation of the two properties thus engaged in a hostile conflict would just make one. On one occasion he had befriended the Independents, but more recently he had sided with the powerful group of Presbyterians. But in the enthusiasm of the moment, no resources were expended to bring about resolution of the crucial issues agitated between the people and the crown.

Surprised by the subtle and pernicious nature of the work, the author of which he describes as “a. The power of licensing theological books was now in the hands of the bishops; and they found that they had two weighty objections to Owen's treatise. Then it was seen who were the real spiritual shepherds of the people and who were the foreigners and hirelings.

The spiritual oppressors of the Puritans fled from the presence of the plague, while the banned preachers. But notwithstanding all his privacy he was observed, and information given of the place where he lay. Then appeared the first volume of Owen's greatest work, his "Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews,"—a work which was to be the same.

It is impossible to read many parts of it yet, without sharing with the laughers of the age the influence of Marvell's genius. Owen, to meet him at another Justice of the Peace's house on a certain day. The first sheet of his "Meditations on the Glory of Christ" had passed through the press under the supervision of the Rev.

He leaves nothing to be added by anyone who will follow the same path, not even little gleanings on the corners of the field. It is a spirit which the inert orthodoxy and superficial evangelization of the Church must have urgently breathed into her even now from heaven. And the painstaking and prayerful study of the writings of the Puritans would go a long way toward restoring it.

APPENDIX TO THE LIFE OF DR OWEN

Epitaph on his Monument

He left the world on a day terrible to the church by the cruelties of men, but blessed to himself by the praise of his God, August 24, 1683, aged 67 years.

Some letters

If you would throw away so much time as to read a part of my late discourse on justification, it is not improbable but that you would see something of the nature of the guilt and imputation of it, which may give you satisfaction . 1, which speaks, as you say, of Christ's active obedience imputed to us, which is contrary to Art. 3, where it is said that Christ acquits by his obedience in death and not by his fulfillment of the law.

But you add a reason, by which you intend to oppose this doctrine of ours concerning the imputation of the operative righteousness of Christ in our justification. Why, you say, is contrary to reason; for we are freed from the fulfillment of the justice of God by being punished with death, but not from the fulfillment of the law: therefore the fulfillment of the law by Christ is not. Your dear baby is in the eternal joy of the fruits of all our prayers;.

That you will bring yourself into a new engagement to live more for him: and you will find the remembrance of your work easy; for it is part of the yoke of Christ. Our loving service to your wife, and to all your family who are of the household of God. If the joy of the Lord is not strength for it now, it will fail.

For the desire for it is always in my heart; and to express this desire on every occasion, I value one part of the profession of the gospel to which I am called. Whether one especially insists on the power of the magistrate, especially as under civil compulsion and punishment in case of error or heresy, be necessary in this first attempt. I will now read them again, and set down as I pass, especially such apprehensions as I have of the several of them.

Lord, I will pray that the Lord will guide and prosper you in all your studies and endeavors for the service of Christ in the world, especially in this your desire and study to bring about the peace and love promised among those who believe and do say your prayers.

His Works

For more information about the AGES Digital Library, be it pricing structure, exchange for labor or books, current offers, policies. The library consists of books and other literature of lasting value to the Christian community. Our goal from the beginning has been to “make the words of the wise available to all in a cheap way.” We have in mind the student, teacher, pastor, missionary, evangelist and church worker who needs a high quality reference library, one that is portable, practical and inexpensive.

This has meant that the collection is eclectic and may include works that contain viewpoints that we at AGES Software disagree with. This paradox, however, is consistent with our design: any useful library consists of books on a wide variety of topics and sometimes includes information for reference purposes only. We hope that the AGES Digital Library will reflect—when its components are released—the necessary breadth and depth for a robust personal library.

Most of the books and documents were scanned or typed from works that have become public domain. They have been designed in a format that can be easily used by computer users everywhere. In the process of preparing the Library, AGES Software took the liberty of making some corrections to the text.

When we discovered spelling errors, certain archaic forms, typographical errors or omissions in the original, we made every effort to correct them. It has been our intention to remove anything that could obscure the meaning or otherwise detract from a book's usefulness to the modern reader.
