The objective of this research was to know if scanning and scanning technique increases students' reading comprehension, teacher and student performance. Referring to the research result, it can be concluded that scanning and scanning technique can increase students' reading comprehension.

If students lack reading comprehension, it can affect the result of learning English. In this research, the writer will investigate whether the application of scanning and scanning technique can increase students' reading comprehension. Based on the background mentioned earlier, the researcher conducted the research entitled: ENHANCEMENT OF STUDENT READING THROUGH SCANNING AND SKIMMING TECHNIQUE IN SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 3 METRO.

The first, Albert Josiah Harris, claims that "reading is the result of the interaction between the perception of graphic symbols that represent language and the reader's language skills and word knowledge."2. 7Jean Wallace Gillet and Charles Temple, Understanding Reading Problem, Harper Collins College Publisher, United States of America, 1994, p. 35. are interrelated, they are an internal factor and an external factor. a) Internal factor. Interest is one of the important factors in increasing a student's reading comprehension.

From this we can conclude that good interest and motivation are the result of good student success. A student's reading comprehension depends on the difficulty level of the text. Thus, it can affect the student's understanding if the given text is not at the right difficulty level of the readers or students.

The reading teacher must be careful in choosing the text and then relate it to the students' reading comprehension achievements. . meaning, actively using our knowledge of the world and of texts to understand each new thing we read.

Scanning is a technique often used when looking up a word knows what the students are looking for, so they focus on finding a particular answer. Scanning is also used when the students first find a resource to determine if it will answer the questions. When the author uses organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next.

Some people read the first and last paragraphs using heading 2. Summarize and other organizers as they move down the page

Increasing the Students Reading Comprehension through Scanning and Skimming Technique

If the reader's goal is to search for information, he will scan for a specific word. If the reader has a large amount of text to cover, he will find that using scanning or skimming is more practical than reading every word. When you study, know what you are looking for, think of questions and search for answers.

By means of scanning, the students find specific details of the text and by means of skimming, the students extract the main idea from a text.

  • Observing
  • Reflecting

Lukman El Garsel model17 Based on figure 3, it can be deduced that the classroom action research is a dynamic process that has four aspects (planning, action, observation and reflection) in each cycle, it is done in the class for the quality of learning process. The researcher explained the teacher's role and the students' role in teaching reading by using scanning and skimming technique. After the students will be given the treatment in cycle 1, they will be given the post-test.

The instrument that will be used has a different mode than the instrument that will be given in the pretest. The third step in CAR is observation. In this step, the researcher observed the teaching learning process using format observation. Outlines of observation in this step, such as: paying attention and enthusiastically responding to the topic, following the teacher's instructions, understanding the material, asking questions and answering the teacher's question, active in the classroom.

In this step, the researcher uses the data for evaluation to make improvement for the second cycle. In cycle 2, marking is performed from cycle 1, this means that if cycle 1 failed, cycle 2 must be done. Through reflection, the researcher and the collaborator would compare the score distribution of pre-test and post-test, the researcher would review and reflect on students' attitude and teacher performance whether it is positive or negative, enough in the second cycle or need for next cycle.

Data Collection Method

In this study, the researcher took the data from the school, such as the total number of students, teachers, and the condition of the school. These may constitute or add to the entire data collected (as when field notes supplement conventional interview data).

In this study, there is some improvement of the students' reading comprehension using scanning skimming technique. In this meeting, the students expected by the teacher received specific information about reading comprehension. This meeting was opened by greeting, praying and checking the attendance list and motivating the students.

I told the students that we wanted to study reading using the scanning and skimming technique. After that, I give the students a short paragraph on how to operate the radio, and then I explain the scanning process and skimming techniques when reading. This time we started the meeting with greetings, prayer and checking the list of those present and motivating the students.

In the post-test, there were 10 students (38.46%) out of 26 students who had a good score, the result of the student test was better than the student test before treatment. Based on the result, it can be said that the scanning and skimming technique has a positive effect on the students in the learning process of education. The researcher overcomes this situation by speaking louder and giving clear instructions to the students.

The meeting was opened by greeting the students, praying and checking and motivating the attendance list. I told the students that we wanted to study vocabulary using scanning and skimming techniques. Then I gave the students a short paragraph on "How to create a Facebook account?" then i explain the procedure of scanning and skimming technique in reading.

This time we opened the meeting with greetings, playing games, reviewing the list of those present and motivating the students. The post-test was done to find out the students' achievement in reading comprehension and the researcher wanted to know whether the students' scores increased or not. This is evident from student activity and student results that are higher than the 1st cycle.

The researcher and collaborator found that in learning activities, the more active and active students looked fun and enjoyed learning the English scanning and skimming technique.

Discussion

  • Learning Result at the Cycle 1
  • Learning Result at the Cycle 2

From the result of the pre-test and post-test, we know that there was an increase in the results score of the students. From the analysis done by the writer and collaborator, the students' pre-test showed that most of the students had difficulty remembering the new vocabulary because the teacher was not creative to use the interesting technique to teach the students the vocabulary easy to remember. To see the reading performance of the students, the researcher and the staff member applied a post-test after the end of the treatment.

From the post-test cycle 1 score it could be seen that there was an increase because I gave the treatment based on the lesson plan. We also wanted to see the difference between the results of the students' pre-test and the results of the students' post-test and found whether the treatment increases the students' reading comprehension. From the increase of pre-test to the post-test cycle 1, it can be known that scanning and skimming technique can increase the students' reading comprehension.

They were also active in the classroom during the presentation of the material using the scanning and scanning technique. Because the students' result could not reach the target, we decided to give a test to the students using the same method in cycle 1, but with a different lesson plan. This meant that students could achieve the target, the target was 80% for students to gain a score of 65 or above.

From the line graph above, it can be concluded that there has been an increase from the result of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2. It proves that scanning and skimming is the effective technique to increase students' reading comprehension.

Interpretation

The research is successful if the student is able to achieve minimum mastery criteria (KKM) of 65. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, it can be seen that scanning and skimming are able to increase the students' reading comprehension.

Observation

However, after the implementation of the solutions to solve the weakness, not only the teachers' teaching performance that increased, but also the students' activities and students' reading comprehension implemented. Scanning and skimming technique in Reading at grade 9 of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Metro in the academic year 2011/2012 increased the English learning process. The total score of teachers' performance in cycle 1 is 65 while the total score in cycle 2 is 70.

After analyzing the data, the researcher concluded that the scanning and skimming technique increased the students' reading comprehension. The result of the post-test can meet the criteria where 80.7% (21 students) achieved a minimum of 65.
