Last Friday morning, the entrance hall was crowded! All our new students for 2010-2011, from 27 different countries, were invited by Total to the annual and well-known “Welcome Meeting” which traditionally takes place at the Coupole Tower, la Défense, in Paris.
The atmosphere was jovial and our Total scholars seemed quite curious and in awe of the Total tower, which represents so much for all of them.
Some students stood around, talking cheerfully, happy to discover new faces. Others were busily chatting about their new lives in France.
After a short welcome speech from Mrs. Véronique Mignonac, Head of Total’s Scholarship Department, they had an opportunity to listen to presentations by Total Managers.
First, Mr. Alain Champeaux, Refining & Marketing Senior Vice-President Africa & Middle- East, presented a lecture on “Growth in Africa: a chance for Total”, followed by Mr. Ewald Bruckmuller, Head of Ethics Policies, who talked to the students about “Ethics within Total”.
“Total Commited in New Energies”, a lecture presented by Mr. Christophe Juban, Chief Administrative Officer Electricity & New Energies Division, was followed by a talk entitled
“Total EP Operations” given by Mr. Benoit Ludot, Deputy Vice-President Drilling & Completion, who ended the meeting.
This instructive afternoon was followed by a nice cocktail where students were able to chat with the Managers and ask them any questions. They then went to the “Marina de Bercy”
for a Cruise dinner along the river Seine.

EDITORIAL Dear Students,
“Welcome to France!

This was the message Total’s Teams of managers and partners gave to the 105 new scholars participating in the International Scholarship Programme.
In this 6thedition of the programme, which was launched in 2004, new countries were represented for the very first time, namely Gabon, Congo and Angola.
It was also a first for the Yemen LNG scholars attending this “12 a.m.
to 12 p.m.” meeting.
Presentations and a wonderful cruise-dinner on the river Seine provided a fantastic opportunity to meet and mingle under the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.

“I am glad to have the opportunity to thank Total for this amazing scholarship. I graduated from the Master’s programme in Industrial Management and Logistics at the Ecole des Mines de Paris just last October. I will also take this opportunity to thank the entire Logistics Department where I did my six months’ internship at Total E&P Paris. And last but not least, I offer my sincerest thanks to the whole Total Scholarship Team for their support. This last year has been an unforgettable one. I wish you all the very best!”

September 30th, 2010: École des Mines de Paris Graduation Ceremony
“The graduation ceremony for Total’s International Scholarship recipients at Nancy’s École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie (ENSG) was held on September 24th. The scholars not only celebrated the receipt of their Master’s degrees but also the precious friendships forged after two years. The ceremony welcomed many international students from countries such as Azerbaijan, France, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Russia, etc.
Among them were 13 brilliant Total overseas scholars, ten of whom were students in Subterranean Reservoirs of Energy and the rest were studying Petroleum Geology. These students were the most long-standing Total scholars, and had been sponsored by Total for 2 full years since October 2008 before being awarded their Master’s degree by the director of ENSG School, Professor Michael Panfilov.
Total is proud of these scholars, who have proven themselves to be true pioneers in both academics and social and administrative affairs. We hope that this graduation ceremony will mark the beginning of a great and glamorous future in which the Total scholars of Nancy play major roles as future shapers.”

PROGRAM AMBASSADORS
Mr. Daniel Blasco, General Manager of TEPBO with the new Bolivian scholars, and Mr. Carlos A. Rojas, the Total Ambassador in Bolivia for 2010
The 2010 scholars and TEPBO participants sharing a traditional “camba”lunch
We are very proud to present the first initiative of our Bolivian Ambassador!
An ambassador’s role is extremely important for the development and the strengthening of our network of scholars. The idea is to maintain and develop personal contacts between subsidiaries and former scholars.
On August 27th, our ambassador, Carlos Augusto Rojas Mendizabal, took the initiative and organized the new Total Scholarship Recipients Day in Bolivia.
The new Total Bolivian scholars, Armin Dorgathen and Alvaro Santillan boarded a flight from La Paz and visited the TEPBO offices in Santa Cruz.
“During this visit, they were able to meet former scholars, share experiences with regard to life and study in France, and get answers to some of their questions. It was also a chance to give them a taste of Total’s activities locally and worldwide. They were also able to go back with key addresses and the contact information of former Bolivian students in France.
A big thanks, once again, to all TEPBO employees who participated in this event.”

Total announced that it has signed an agreement with the national oil company Petronas to acquire a 85% interest in the Block SK317B, offshore Malaysia. Under the terms of the agreement, Total will operate the Block alongside its partner Petronas Carigali holding the remaining 15% interest.
The Block SK317B is located around 100 kilometres offshore Sarawak, in water depths ranging from 200 to 1,000 metres. It covers an area of more than 700 square kilometers. Total operates these two blocks where a seismic campaign was shot in 2009 and where a high-pressure/high temperature exploration drilling campaign will start in 2011.
Total Revives Its Exploration Activities in Gabon
Total announced that the Gabonese government has approved the acquisition by its subsidiary Total Gabon of interests in three onshore exploration licenses in the sedimentary basin of Gabon.
Total has been present in Gabon for 80 years. Its equity production averaged 71,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2009.
Total Gabon, one of the Group’s longest established subsidiaries in sub-Saharan Africa, is a listed public company in which Total owns 58%. Total maintains its position as a key player in Gabon’s oil industry through redeveloping the Anguille field, investing substantially in a number of onshore and offshore fields, and resuming large-scale exploration operations.

Total acquires interests in several licenses in Argentina to appraise their shale gas potential
Total announced that it has acquired interests in four exploration licenses in Argentina in partnership with YPF in order to appraise their shale gas potential. Located in the Neuquén Basin, the licenses were awarded by the provincial authorities for a six-year period.
The four new blocks are the latest addition to the Group’s portfolio of assets in Argentina, which includes significant holdings in shale gas play.
Commenting on the transactions, Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President of Total Exploration & Production, said: “These new interests in acreage that is potentially rich in shale gas further strengthen Total’s presence in unconventional gas, a domain in which Total has the ambition to grow significantly.”
Present in Argentina since 1978, Total, through its subsidiary Total Austral, operates 28% of the country’s gas production.
