TWO NEW AMERICAN SPECIES OF THE GENUS ETHMIA.

Ethmia monachella, new
species.Labial palpi
weak:
secondjoint clothed with spreading black hairs:terminaljoint short,black. Face, head,andbasaljoint ofantenna?deep black; antenna- dark fuscous.
Thorax
deep black. Forewings with a broad,longitudinal,straight-edged blackishbrown
streak from base to apex,above which a narrow, pale yellowishcostal edge and below which a broad, grayish yellow dorsal streak.Around
the apical edgeis a regu- larseries ofdeep black marginaldots,threeofwhich are above thecen- traldarkstreak,two or three in it,and sixorsevenbelowit. Inthe pale dorsal partof thewing
aretwo smallblack dots,one atbasal fourthand one on the middle of the wing.Hindwings
semi-transparent, smoky, black, with lighter yellowish dorsal cilia.Abdomen
deep black, with brightorangetips to thesix posterior segments andwith bright orange genitalia. Anteriorand
middle legs black, with narrowwhite tarsal an- nulations; posterior legsblack, with bright orange tibial tuft and with whitetarsal annulations.Alarexpanse, 20
mm.

This
speciesbelongs
tothe group umbrimarginella Busck and
allies,but
is easilyrecognized by the
light costaledge above the
centrallongitudinal dark
streak.Ethmia hammella, new
species.Labial palpi white,smooth.
Face
and head white. Antenna?yellow-ish.
Thorax
and patagia deep bluish black with light straw-yellow posterior tips. Forewings shining light straw-yellow, sprinkled with bluishblack scales and with deepbluish black markings; extreme base and a small costal spot near base bluish black: alarge quadrangular bluish black dorsal spot near base; three roundspotsonthe disk of thesame
color, twoofwhich are close together, nearlyconfluent,near costa: thethirdlower and farther outonthe middleof the wing.The
apical and especially the terminal edge of the wing broadlybluish black, with twosmall round dotspreceding;beyond
the upperofthese, justbefore apex,is an ill-defined blotch of white scales. Ciliayellowish fuscous.Abdomen
dark brown, each joint with conspicuouslight ochreous pos- terioredge.Hindwings
blackish fuscous, darkesttowards the tip,with54 PROC. ENT.

above inner margin; discal dots large,conjoined into a roundedmark
; outer line of the ground-colorslightly flexuous, edged with black on bothsides; a
row
ofconfluent black spotsat thebaseof thefringe.Hind wing
