Fore leg white; tibia sepia on the outer side; Tarsal segments shade from sepia to clay; middle legs similar, but tarsal segments paler; hind femur white with sepia on outer side; tibia ocherous white with sepia on outer side; white spurs and tibia with white transverse line in middle and tip. Fore legs white, tibia fuscous on outer side; overlapping tarsal segments reddish brown; middle white; tibia fuscous on outer side except apically edged white;. Fore leg white; tibia sepia on the outer side; tarsal segments clay color; similar to the middle leg; tibia fuscous black on outer side except basal and distal white and a fine white line throughout.

Foreleg light cinnamon; similar to the middle leg; tibia with gray spot at base of spurs; hind legs whitish white coated with cinnamon on outer side. Labial palpus white ochreous on inner side, irritated with fuscous and hazel; second segment hazel on outer side with fuscous scales tipped with white on posterior tuft; third segment similarly marked, white tipped. Fore legs ochreous white, shaded with hazel and reddish externally; similar to the middle leg; hind legs ocherous white irrorate with fuscous on the outside.

Forelegs ochre-white; femur superimposed ferruginous on the outside; tibia carmine shaded; metatarsus ochreous white; Hind leg ochreous white with a small ill-defined fuscous spot in the middle and another near distal end of tibia. Described from the cf holotype (no date; Wm. Schaus) and a $ paratype, British Guiana, Bar- FIGURE 14.—Gonionota eremia, new species, a, ventral view of male genitalia with left harp and aedeagus removed;. Labial palpus ochreous white on inner surface with light reddish soiling and fuscous irrorations; The rest is suffused reddish and strongly tinged with fuscous and grey; posterior tuft of second segment mixed with much gray.

Foreleg ochreous white, heavily marked with reddish and hairy on outer side; middle leg ochreous white with some greyish spots on outer side; hind leg ochreous white with sparse greyish hairy spots.

Fore leg ochreous white, covered with amber brown and carmine on the outside; midden similar; hind leg ochreous white with scattered amber and carmine spots; The terminal spines of the vexillata clasper are directed inwards and toward the sacculus, while those of the paravexillata are directed toward the cucullus. Fore leg ochreous white; femur and tibia fuscous externally; tarsal segments covered orange-orange; middle leg ochreous white with a small hairy spot on tibia; hind leg ochreous white with a few scattered greyish scales.

In ioleuca the spiny part of the prehensile extends to the end of the cucullus, but in the transverse the prehensile is weak and has only a few curved spines around the center of the harpe. Labial palpus gray-brown; second segment with some ocher white on the inside; top of the third segment ocher white. Foreleg ocher white; thigh gray-brown on the outside; tibia reddish brown on the outside; middle leg similar but lighter and speckled; hind leg whitish ochre-colored; tibial and tarsal segments speckled brown and gray.

Abdomen ochre-white with less rust-colored scales mixed in; ventrally finely irrorate with fuscous. In addition, the cornutus with barbed hairs and the small spike at the distal end of the aedeagus are not shown in Figure 4a. Labial palpus light ochreous buff; second segment irrorate with ochreous brown; posterior tuft grayish fuscous; third segment similar but irrorate with reddish scales and ocher white apex.

The hindwing is ornamented white, shading basally to clay-colored towards the margins; termen narrow dark clay color; cilia ochreous white below anal angle becoming darker towards tip. Coloration of ground of fore wing costal two-fifths yellow-yellow, dorsal three-fifths yellow-yellow; outer edge of costa ochreous white; basal fifth of wing, inner side of costa ochraceous salmon and ochraceous tawny; and. The closest relative of phthiochroma is isophylla Meyrick from Peru, but phthiochroma has no trace of the "reddish gray" hind wing described for isophylla.

In addition, the fuscorous flooding of the ribs two-fifths of the forewing of Phthiochroma is absent in isophylla. The male sexual organs of the two are strikingly similar, demonstrating the obvious close relationship, but the curved spines at the end of the bracket of isophylla are longer than those of phthiochroma. Once the generic boundaries of the South American species are established, a new genus will most likely be needed for this species and its congeners.

Fore leg femur and tibia ocher white, the tibia crimson on the outside; tarsal segments pale yellow; first tarsal segment scarlet on the outside; midleg pale yellow to ocher white; hind leg ocher white. Although very closely related to miltopa, heterochroma is easily distinguished by its crimson spots on the forewing and the absence of the large, white disc stripe found in miltopa. I examined Meyrick's type silvicolor in the Naturhistorisches Museum, in Vienna, and Walsingham's type chlorophylla in the British Museum (Natural History). The genitalia of the types, and additional material before me from Mexico and Costa Rica all agree.

Catalog of the type specimens of microlepidoptera in the British Museum (Natural History) described by Edward Meyrick, 4:1-521, plates 1-252.
