Bill Cook, my supervising professor, has been such an encourager to me throughout the demands of this degree program. I am especially grateful to my godly parents, James Albert and Betty Holmes, who have never failed to give me their love and support. The members of New Salem Baptist Church have blessed me with their encouragement, interest and prayers.

There is no way I can fully thank my bride, Beth, for her unwavering support throughout this process. She has prayed for me, sacrificed for me, and set an example of faithfulness and diligence for me that has truly been an example.

INTRODUCTION

Martin points out that there are at least eight different words in the New Testament text that describe human attitudes and activities in worship. This goal will be achieved through an analysis of the vocabulary of worship within the New. This thesis will show that church worship in the first century was somewhat different from today's concept embodied in the English word.

The most notable of these topics was the common misconception among Christians that the New Testament regularly speaks of worship in connection with the corporate meeting of the church. This study is based on a thorough examination of the available books, commentaries, treatises, essays, dictionaries and journal articles relating to Christian worship in the New Testament. To establish the first-century understanding of Christian worship, it is appropriate to initially consider the significance of Old Testament worship patterns and vocabularies for those of the New Testament period.

After a brief overview of the characteristics of Old Testament worship and the relevant vocabulary corresponding to specific words in the New Testament, a thorough examination of the eight Greek words (or phrases) used for worship in the New Testament text will be conducted. . According to Webber, the worship of the Old Testament was "founded on the Exodus event, the event that shaped all of Israel's religious life. Its presence.

There are several words for worship in the Old Testament vocabulary that relate to such matters as priesthood, the sacrificial system, and temple service. In her semantic analysis of the worship vocabulary of the New Testament, Jobes seems to agree with Cranfield's view. The word EU(JE~EW) and its forms, as with most (JE~-) words, occur very rarely in the LXX.

The practice and vocabulary of worship in the New Testament is clearly influenced by that of the Old Testament era. To understand the nature of Christian worship in the first century, not only must the particular grammar and vocabulary of the New Testament be examined, but it is also critical to examine the biblical passages that describe specific contextual settings for worship. Those who offer true worship to the Father do so in the power of the Holy Spirit, but the Holy Spirit is not the person doing the worship.

But in the New Testament, the use of the term is complicated by the fact that it also imported some characteristics from the Old Testament. There is nothing here that would deny her her place in the life of believers. 36. There is no indication that the new believer was to be excluded from any part of the congregation.

34;understanding worship," and according to Jobes, it is worship that corresponds to the nature of the new eschatological reality established by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSIONS

But while it is certainly true that worship involves encouraging fellow believers and meeting individual needs in the congregation, the teaching of the New Testament is that corporate (and individual) worship has a singular focus—God. The New Testament vocabulary for worship contains eight words that can be translated into the English word "worship." There are occasions when a specific rendering would have been better served by using a word other than "worship" because the semantic range varies considerably depending on the particular Greek word. In comparison with other words within the same semantic domain, the prevalence in the New Testament Of'TTPO(JKUVEW and AUTPEVW to refer to Christian worship indicates that Christian worship centers on submission to the authority of God and the performance of the duties that is connected with the general office of the priesthood of the faithful.

Certainly, mutual edification has an important place within the totality of the believer's life and ministry, but the worship of God is extremely important. The early Christians were much more interested in worshiping God than in a careful observance of their "liturgy". Bradshaw understands this fact.
