Who is Really Responsible?
The tragic and pointless death of an Alfred University student has presented the university community with a ditressing dilemma... who is responsible?
It is most difficult to make judgments on a situation of such gravity, and with so many complex implications.
Something must be done to drive home the reality of what has happened. In this case, that something is the university's withdrawal of recognition from Klan Alpine fraternity. It is rather unfortunate that an entire fraternity must suffer as a consequence of this incident, but it is unrealistic and
somewhat immature to take the attitude that no one was responsible for Chuck Stenzel's death.
The real responsibility lies with the attitude that alcohol is essential for any social occasion's success... an attitude carefully cultivated by both the media and society for many years. It is therefore unfair to pin the guilt on one group... or is it?
Social organizations, specifically the Greeks, have long had the reputation of being rather alcohol oriented. Stenzel died as a result of organizational activities. It is logical that the organization bear the brunt of criticism and disciplinary actions.
The penalization of Klan, seen by some as unjust, is necessary in order to help everyone, organizations and independents as well, become more aware that the waste of human lives cannot be tolerated in any form.
Allenterm Should Be Retained
The validity of Allenterm is not a new question at Alfred University. Professor Harrie Stevens' proposal for an academic calendar which would abolish Allenterm has once again brought the issue to our attention.
Last time around-several years ago-Allenterm was
"saved" by a very vocal group of students who wanted to revamp the program. This time, some students seem to recognize the need for more revision of Allenterm guidelines.
Others appear quite decided against continuing it, stating that it is a waste of time.
Allenterm represents an opportunity for those students who are normally regimented into a tight and often restrictive academic schedule to break free of the limitations imposed on them by choice of major.
It is a very impressive program when viewed for potential- the resources open to students who take Allenterms which utilize the faculty and facilities of the university are awesome. The problem lies mostly with students. The chief complaints have been from those who view Allenterm as a time for students to "hang out" aimlessly, wasting time and accomplishing little. There are students who also do the same thing during the regular semesters, but the grade system makes it much more difficult to go unnoticed.
The suggestion that it is up to the students to responsibly construct useful, educational Allenterms, or to take full advantage of the opportunities offered, is almost laughable.
It is human nature to want to "rest" after a semester of
hard work. Therefore it becomes necessary to establish rules and guidelines. Changes should be made in the Allenterm program. Rules need tightening. Closer attention should be paid to what is offered and how much is expected of a student.
Removing Allenterm from the curriculum altogether would be a mistake. Presently, in the eyes of many, it is one of the characteristics which set Alfred apart from other universities. It is certainly one of the most visible features of this school's attitude towards education. It shows that Alfred allows students a certain independence in their studies, the freedom to break free of the "usual" and examine areas which would be impossible to touch outside of a university situation.
On University stationary, at least, Alfred University is a school "majoring in the human experience." At a time when many schools a r e gradually evolving into highly computerized businesses, it is important that we appreciate the potentialities of Allenterm and not sell out to the attitude that in order to be a quality school, we must conform. It is possible to follow state-imposed regulations while still holding on to a program which distinguishes Alfred as a school that cares about the individual as well as the business as a whole.
Within any program there will be failures, people who for want of direction or motivation will misuse time or goldbrick their way through, giving the program a bad name.
Abolishing Allenterm would certainly solve that problem, but would also deprive serious, conscientious students of the chance to realize a great creative potential.
