University presents ceramic exhibit by visiting Japanese artist 9/29/06
Satoru Hoshino, who was a visiting artist from Japan this past summer, returns to the Alfred University campus in early October to assist with the installation of his work into the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art (S-JIMCA) and to attend an opening reception for his exhibit on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.Hoshino will also present a slide presentation, sponsored by the Division of Ceramic Art on Friday, Oct. 20 in Binns-Merrill Hall, room 106, at 4:30 p.m. Both of these events are free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through Dec.
8.Hoshino was an artist-in-residency in which he participated in a collaborative exhibition project with the S-JIMCA and the Division of Ceramic Art. He arrived in Alfred from Japan on May 13 and returned home Aug. 13. During the three months of his residency, Hoshino says he experienced the world of Alfred. He battled through the constantly changing weather from unseasonably cold to unbelievably hot in July. Through it all he produced a body of work in the School of Art & Design's ceramic art studios. Hoshino says he used black and white stoneware clays which he rolled, layered and pinched into clay coils of undulating, gnarled, tornado-like shapes, using his thumb and fingers in the formatting process. Hoshino's residency coincided with the Division of Ceramic Art's Summer School, providing an opportunity for the students to watch him work and engage in conversation. The S-JIMCA and the Division of Ceramic Art thank the following for their assistance and support: Joseph Lewis III, dean of the School of Art &
Design; Kathy Woughter, vice president for student affairs; Brenda Porter, director of residence life; David
Fredrickson, technical specialist/adjunct, School of Art & Design; Choichiro and Nanako Yatani of Alfred; and Friends of the Museum. The museum is open Wednesday to Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
