GENERAL INFORMA TION

The entire hospital consists of members of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine. In addition to the clinical facilities offered by the departments and clinics of the University Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine has clinical privileges. A year later, the Nashville Academy of Medicine donated to the school the private library of Dr.

Early in the first semester, these students are given a short orientation period on the organization and use of the Library. These meetings are open to students of the School and to the medical profession of the community.

ADMISSION

The medical school entrance exam must be taken in the year before applying for admission to medical school. This test is administered under the auspices of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is required of Vanderbilt applicants. The school record, together with the recommendations and the result of this examination, will be used by the admissions committee in considering applications for admission to the Faculty of Medicine.

Applications for admission may be submitted approximately one year prior to the entry date, at which time the Admissions Committee begins reviewing applicants. Applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee and a final decision on acceptance or rejection can be made at any time. Successful applicants are required to make a $50 deposit within a specified time after notification of their acceptance.

This deposit is credited for the payment of the first tuition and in case the student does not matriculate, it is not returned. Application forms may be obtained by applying to the Registrar, School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Nashville 5, Tennessee. Each application must be accompanied by a money order with a check for $10, payable to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Applications for advanced status must be submitted according to the procedure described for admission to the freshman class, with acceptable applicants paying the same deposit of $50. All members of the freshman class and all students transferring from other institutions must undergo a thorough physical examination within two weeks of the date of admission. Facilities in the Student Health Service are available to any student who feels indisposed in any way.

REGULATIONS

They must have spent at least four years of study as matriculated medical students, unless that requirement is waived at the discretion of the School on proof that they have satisfactorily completed the equivalent studies. They must have satisfactorily completed all the required courses of the medical curriculum, passed all prescribed examinations and be free of debt to the University. On completion of the four-year course, each student who has met these requirements will be recommended for the degree of Doctor of Medicine.

Students who perform work outside must report such activity at the beginning of the school year or at any time during the school year that such work is performed. This medal is awarded to the student in the graduating class of each university school who has achieved the highest average standing in scholarship over the four consecutive years of study. This society aims to develop high standards of personal conduct and scholarship and to encourage medical research.

Beauchamp, in memory of her husband, who was for many years superintendent of the Central State Hospital at Nashville, is awarded to a student who has shown the greatest progress in neurology and psychiatry and is otherwise worthy and deserving. Established in 1945 by the Borden Company, Inc. Foundation, this award awards $500 annually to the person in the graduating class of the School of Medicine who has done the most meritorious work in any year while enrolled at the school. undergraduate research in the medical field. Candidates for the award should contact the dean of the Faculty of Medicine for consideration.

Merrell Company, this award of $150 is provided annually by Vanderbilt University medical students for the two most outstanding papers on research in the field of pathology, regardless of topic. The author of the first place paper will receive $100 and the author of the second place paper, $50. The selection of the papers is decided by the Dean or by a committee appointed by him.

EXPENSES

All students must obtain hemocycometers, hemoglobinometers and ophthalmoscopes before the start of the second quarter of the second year. For information on scholarships, work grants, and loan funds available to co-medical students, direct inquiries to the Chair of the Faculty of Medicine Scholarships and Fellowships Committee. Vanderbilt residence halls are designed to foster a sense of community on campus and bring the learning experience to every stage of student life.

The rooms are occupied the day before the start of the semester and until the last day of the semester. Students who withdraw from the University for any reason or are dismissed or required by the College to withdraw after the beginning of the semester are not entitled to a refund or repayment of room rent or other regular charges or assessments, and the University will not be responsible for their refund or refund. Men's rooms can be reserved by checking in with the Dean of Men's Office; rooms for women, after registration with the office of the Dean of Women.

Refund of room reservation deposit This will be considered if the reason for the request is judged to be a matter beyond the applicant's control and if the request is received in writing by 1 July at the latest. Single rooms for men are available in the residence hall for graduate and professional students, built in 1957 and located adjacent to Kirklad Hall. Single and double rooms for graduate women are available in the Women's Graduate House at 305 Twenty-fourth Avenue, South, near Rand Dining Hall.

The University reserves the right to require any occupant to vacate the apartment at any time and for any reason, reasonable notice having been given. A list of rooms and apartments for rent near campus is maintained in the office of the Dean of Men. Students joining by the semester must apply to the office of the Director of Food Services.

PLAN OF INSTR UCTION

Students are given an understanding of the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship and of the responsibilities inherent in this interpersonal relationship. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine was one of the original medical schools to conduct a program of military and disaster medicine under the National Defense Medical Education Plan. In addition, aspects of military medicine are emphasized at appropriate places in the various courses.

These courses are under the direction of the Director of Postgraduate Instruction and the Head of the Department concerned. Fees for special and intensive courses are set by the dean and the director of Postgraduate Education in collaboration with the head of the institute where the teaching is given. In regular courses or in special electives, such students are admitted by the relevant department heads and registered in

Candidates for the Master of Science in Audiology and Speech degree will work in these areas at the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center and the School of Medicine. Graduate work in this division is regulated by the faculty of the School of Medicine.

COURSES OF STUDY

DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES IN AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH CORRECTION

Opened by {lCrmission of instructor for students qualified to participate in the chosen clinical activity. Can be taken for thesis credit in the third and fourth quarter of the master's program after an approved prospectus. The course can, after approval by the department, also be taken for approval of subjects that are not related to the thesis.

A detailed analysis of the production and formation of all speech sounds in the English language with an emphasis on the methods of development of these sounds in the hearing child. Mental, social and emotional development of hearing-impaired and normal preschool children. A study of the research literature on the effects of hearing impairment on the social, intellectual and psychological development of an individual.

Special examination of research methods and current significant research results within audiology. A review of the major research in the field of stuttering, with emphasis on etiologies and therapies. Special examination of research methods and current significant research results in speech science and experimental phonetics.

A study of aphasic language disorders considering the history of aphasia, normal and abnormal language function, perception and perceptual disorders. NOTE: In addition, there are courses in the George Peabody College Department of Special Education and Arts available to graduate students in the Department of Audiology and specialization while completing a sequence of study in his major or minor.
