The implementation of a contextual redefinition strategy in learning to read among eleventh grade students of MA Brntom*r*nnu Tskalar. Judul Skripsi: The implementation of a contextual redefinition strategy in teaching reading to the second year students of MA Bontomarannu Takalar. Strategy in teaching reading to second-year MA student Bontomarannu Takalar (supervised by Abd. Muin and Nurdevi Bte Abdul).

The purpose of this study was to find out the effectiveness of the Contextual Redefinition Strategy and increase students' reading skills in reading instruction. There were two variables, namely the independent variable (the independent variable was the use of the contextual redefinition strategy) and the dependent variable (the dependent variable was the students' reading skills). The population of this study was the second year of MA Bontomarannu academic year 2016/2017 and consisted of 28 students.

Based on the findings and discussion of the study, the researcher concluded that the implementation of the contextual redefinition strategy does not improve the students' reading comprehension among the second year students of MA Bontomarannu Takalar. Appendix B Attendance list of experimental class Appendix C Attendance list of control class Appendix D Instrument of pre- and post-test Appendix E The driving score of experimental class Appendix F The driving score of control class.

INTRODUCTION

  • Problem Statements
  • Objective of The Research
  • Significance of the Research
  • The Scope of the Research

The researcher believes that one of the relevant strategies that can be used to improve students' reading skills is the context redefinition strategy. Based on the previous statement, the writer conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of contextual redefinition strategy in teaching reading, the title of this study was “Implementing Contextual. What is the use of context redefinition strategy in teaching reading skills to second year MA student Bontomarannu Takalar.

How Using Contextual Redefinition Strategy Increases Student Reading Skill Achievement in Second Year MA Student Bontomarannu Takalar. In relation to the above research questions, the objectives of the research are to find out the effectiveness of the Contextual Redefinition Strategy and to increase the students' reading ability in teaching reading to the second year students of MA BontomarannuTakalar. For theoretical significance, the finding of this study reinforced the effectiveness of the Contextual Redefinition Strategy in improving students' reading skills.

Firstly, the process through this research will be helpful for the students to improve their reading skills. Secondly, the teacher will adopt this strategy as an alternative strategy in teaching English, especially in the area of reading skills.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

  • Model of Reading
  • The Concept of Contextual Redefinition Strategy
  • Theoretical Framework
  • Hypothesis

This means that contextual redefinition guided the learners to find out the unknown words encountered in the text. Rahmadani (2013) in his Journal, "The effect of using contextual redefinition strategy towards students' reading comprehension in Senior High School (a study at XI Grade of SMA Ranah Pesisisr)". As a result of analysis in the implementation of contextual redefinition strategy for EFL students from.

Again, allow students to present their definitions of the words and give a rationale for their thinking. The purpose of the contextual redefinition is to assist students in contextual analysis by helping them make educated guesses related to the meaning of a specific word. Input refers to use of reading material and Process refers to implementation of input in the classroom.

Alternative Hypothesis (H1): The use of contextual redefinition strategy was effective to improve the reading skill of second year MA students Bontomarannu Takalar. Null hypothesis (H0): the use of contextual redefinition strategy was not effective for improving students' reading skills.

REEARCH METHOD

  • Research Variables
  • Population and Sample
  • Instrument of the Research
  • Procedure of Collecting Data
  • Technique of Data Analysis

The researcher administered a post-test to the students to determine if there was any progress or improvement in the students' reading skills after learning the contextual redefinition strategy. The frequency and percentage of students' scores in the experimental group before and after the test. After the researcher gave the treatment using the conventional method, the students' score improved but not to significance.

Frequency and percentage of students' scores in the pre-test and post-test in the control group. From the result, we can conclude that the students' reading skills in the pretest were satisfactory. The average score was 64.70. From the result, we can conclude that the students' reading skills were assessed as good in the post-test.

After the researcher gave treatment using Contextual Redefinition Strategy, the score of the students improved. The data showed that the use of Contextual Redefinition Strategy in reading can improve students' reading skills. After the researcher gave treatment using Contextual Redefinition Strategy, the score of the students' had.

The data showed that the use of context redefinition strategy in reading could improve students' reading skills. It was supported by the mean score and percentage of students' pre-test and post-test scores in both groups. Especially; students were introduced to a sample descriptive text in a real context that has new vocabulary. The development of the student's vocabulary was revealed by the number of words they used in the pre-test and in the post-test.

At the end of her studies, he was able to complete his thesis entitled “The Implementation of Contextual Redefinition Strategy in Teaching Reading at the Second year Students Of MA Bontomarannu Takalar. FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Discussion

This part presents a discussion that deals with the interpretation of the research findings obtained from the result of statistical analysis to portray the students' reading skills in teaching and learning by means of Contextual Redefinition Strategy on the reading of descriptive text. It could be seen in table 4.1 that the students' reading performance in the pre-test's average score was very poor, it was 46.78. Based on findings above in the use of Contextual Redefinition Strategy in Experimental Group, the data was collected through the text as explanation in the previous findings section showed that the students' reading skills were improved.

Table 4.3 shows that the students' reading achievement in the mean grade before the test was poor, it was 54. This means that the average grade of the students in the Experimental group improved, but not significantly, namely 47.56. This means that the average grade of students in the control group improved, but not significantly, by 19.81%.

The result of the statistical t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental group that received treatment using the Contextual Redefinition Strategy and the control group that received treatment using the conventional method, although the different both did not were sufficiently high. Based on the research results and the discussion in the previous chapter, the increase in students' reading skills through contextual redefinition strategy showed that students' mean scores improve from pretest to posttest in experimental group. Based on these scores above, the researcher clarified that the Contextual Redefinition Strategy was not effective to be used to improve students' ability to read because there was no significant difference between the progress in reading of the students who studied the Contextual Redefinition Strategy , and they are not.

Improving students' reading abilities using print mass media (A classroom action research conducted on eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Colomadu Karanganyar in the academic year 2008/2009). The effect of using a context redefinition strategy on students' reading comprehension in upper secondary school.
