Abstract : Background: Chlorhexidine (CHX) has been effectively used in the treatment of gingival inflammation in the form of mouthwashes, irrigants etc. It has a broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, and has shown to be effective against supra gingival plaque bacteria in the prevention of gingivitis.

AIM: The present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical and microbial effects of CHX chip (Periocol- CGTM) as an adjunct to scaling and root planning.

MATHERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized, controlled, split-mouth study was conducted on 30 patients with chronic periodontitis using a specialized proforma and clinical examinations.

RESULT: On comparison a significant reduction was observed in the mean plaque index, gingival index and pocket depth in the test sites. While microbial analysis also showed significant reduction in spirochetes and motile rod levels in the test.

CONCLUSION: The data suggests a positively significant improvement in gingival and periodontal conditions by the use ofChlorhexidine chip as a local drug delivery system with scaling and root planning.
