Annual Report 2017 -2018

Govt Arts College(Autonomous), Coimbatore has got its own identity and has claimed popularity in this Kongu region. It has seen a long history of 166 years of rich tradition of educational service. The college is one of the oldest in the southern region maintaining a good name which makes the teachers and the taught cherish the pride of being a part of it.

The college establishes its individuality as one of the few among the Govt. Colleges in TamilNadu that had become autonomous. Further, the college is a role model for other progressing institutions in the state. The college has been undergoing the NAAC accreditation process periodically every five years and the NAAC Peer Team visit to the college during February 2013 has further elevated the status of the college with a score of 3.49/4.

National Ranking for Coimbatore Govt Arts College(Autonomous)

The MHRD has been ranking educational institutions viz. Universities, Arts &Science Colleges, Engineering Colleges, etc from 2016 based on certain important criteria like, Infrastructure, Hygiene, Quality Education, Social Welfare, Environmental Awareness

& Protection, Submission of Quality Research Papers, Performance in Sports and Games and thereby releases National Ranking. In the National Ranking list released by the MHRD on 02.04.2018, our Coimbatore Govt Arts College has got the 33rd place at the national level scoring 53.16. This has placed our college in the 10th Rank from among the colleges in Tamil Nadu and 2nd Rank from among the Govt Arts Colleges.

The Principal as well as the college administration expresses its words of gratitude to all concerned, especially, the professors, office staff, Ph.D. and M.Phil. Scholars, UG & PG Students, our Sportsmen and women, NCC Cadets, NSS Volunteers, YRC Members and the members of the Alumni

The college cherishes its pride for having produced many a professionals, businessmen, bureaucrats across the nation. Many of its alumni are rendering their services as scientist, educators, govt. officers, police officers, veterans of Tamil language and Literature, Psychological Experts, advocates, writers etc proclaiming the fame of their alma mater.

Strength of the Students and Teachers

The college has strength of 250 regular Professors ( including a some on deputation) supported with 37 Guest Lecturers including 145 doctorates. Many of them are professionally and academically equipping themselves further by way of taking part in Orientation and Refresher Courses. The strength of our college office staff numbers 38 with a Librarian, Bursar, Superintendent, Assistants, Typist, Computer Science Dept staff and the Lab Assistants

The college has got a strength above 5000 (boys and girls) distributed to the 25 Departments of the College functioning in two shifts (Shift I and Shift II). The College has

got the autonomous status up to 2017. The self-financing programmes have been turned to Government aided programmes pursuant to the Government Orders.

Various Committees of the college

The overall success of the institution is in the hands of the body of academic and allied administration. As a mark of this successful administration, the college carries out the work through various committees viz Administrative Committee, Academic Council, Finance Committee, Board Of Studies, IQAC, NAAC Steering Committee, Library Committee, Hostel Committee, Physical Education Committee, Public Works Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, Placement Cell, Blood Donation Club etc.

Research Profile

The Research Profile of the college is getting enhanced dimension. Many of the teachers keep themselves busy by way of submitting their Major & Minor Projects, publishing books, reviews, research papers in national and international journals. The publication of our teachers meets the expectation and norms of the UGC.

27th Graduation Day

The 27th Graduation Day ceremony was held at our college on Saturday, 03.02.2018 Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Dr.S. Manian was the Chief Guest The Vice-Chancellor gave the Graduation Day Special address distributing the degrees to the successful graduates. A word of thanks is recorded for the Head of the Department of English Dr. U.Sumathy and her team of professors in the department of English for having made all the arrangement for the event.

Seminars and Workshops

Every department is the college has been organising Seminars, Workshops and other Association meetings thereby contributing to the corporate and professional growth of the college. Both the teachers and students take active part in all these academic events.

General Library

The Library of the college houses in around 86000 books. In addition, there are 15 research journals and 25 computer journals in the library. Internet facility is also offered here for the students. The electronic library facility in the general library of the college is a valuable resource.

Hostels

The UG Hostel is functioning in a sprawling campus of 1 hectare and 393 sq. ft. with 60 rooms for students stay and mess. At present, the hostel accommodates 278 students. Dr. D.

Elango,Asst Professor in Economics is the Deputy Warden of the Hostel. He is ably assisted with a Hostel Committee appointed by the college. The Construction of the Women’s Hostel meant for the PG girls’ got over and is ready to accommodate 200 girls. The Deputy Warden is Dr. Sujatha, Asst. Professor of Zoology, who is also assisted by the Hostel Committee of the college. The Hostel has got a library and a playground for the use of the inmates.

CLP for the Students

The Computer Learning Programme offered at our college is very popular as it caters to thousands and thousands of students in gaining computer literacy. Students especially from non-computer background get benefitted through this programme.

Placement Cell

The Placement Cell of the College, under the charge of Dr. Saravanan, AsstProfessor & Head of the Department of Tourism and Travel Management has been actively functioning and has helped in getting placement for 150 Students – placing them in both part-time and full time jobs.

Scholarships;

The college procures various scholarships to its student community. They include Scholarships meant for SC/ST; BC/MBC; minorities; Education through Tamil Medium, First Generation Degree Holders, etc. Further, Scholarship/Financial assistance meant for UzhavarPaathukaapuThittam to the eligible students has also been procured.

Guidance and Counselling Cell

The Guidance and Counselling Cell is functioning in the Department of Psychology. The Cell is extending its commendable service to the needy staff, students and public.

National Cadet Corps

The NCC of our college is yet another pride of rich tradition. The NCC has three units, viz .Infantry, Artillery and Air Wings. The Artillery Wing of our college is one among the only four units in the state. The women NCC cadets are also very active getting name to the college.

National Service Scheme

Dr. S.Kumar, Associate Professor in Economics, Dr, L. Mahendran, Asst Professor in Tamil, and Dr. P. Gunasekaran, Asst. Professor in Geography have shouldered the responsibility of the NSS Units of our college The NSS units have extended their service by attending one day as well as one week camp during the academic year. Further, the volunteers have taken active part in Road Safety Week, Rally conducted in commemoration Sri APJ Abdul Kalaam, Eye Donation Camp, Cancer Awareness Camp, Visit to Orphanages, Tree Planting Camp etc.

Youth Red Cross

The Youth Red Cross of our college is ably run by Dr. M.Suppurathinam, Assistant Professor of Tamil Department and Dr. D. Shanthi, Assistant Professor of English. The YRC volunteers have actively taken part in the Blood Donation Camps, Eye Check Up Camp, Camp for the distribution of medication to Gastrointestinalwell-being initiated by Govt of TamilNadu, Tree-planting etc. Two of our volunteers took part in a seminar held at Delhi.

Physical Education Dept

The Department of Physical Education is catering to the sports and games needs of the students of our college. Our College physical education has earned a good name for its excellent performance in athletics. The students are making use of all the opportunities to prove their mettle. The College appreciates Dr.Vijayakumar, the Director of Physical Education, the instructors, the field staff for doing a good service of training our sportsmen and women to get laurels at the university, district, state and national level tournaments.

Cultural Club

The Cultural Club trains the students in Dramatics, Singing, Dance, Fashion parade etc. Our Students get prizes/shields in the intercollegiate cultural competitions held at other colleges.

Under the Instructions and Guidance of Joint Directorate of Collegiate Education, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalaam Birth Anniversary Celebrations have been held here for which Dr.

Senavarayan, Dr. Chandra Krishnan and Dr. L. Ranganathn, Asst Professors of Tamil Dept made all the arrangements.

The college places itswords of gratitude to Director of Collegiate Education; District Collector; the Public Works Department; Bharathiar University Vice Chancellor, Registrar, our College professors of various departments, Donors, Office Bearers of Alumni, Office Staff, and all other concerned for their co-operation in the growth and development of our College.
