For Establishing One Stop
Career Guidance & Skilling Center (CGSC)
At 115 Aspirational Districts of India.
Concept Plan
Implemented By
FUEL Founder Shri. Ketan Deshpande & Chief Mentor Shri. Santosh Huralikoppi as ''Champions of Change'' for Education and Skill Development with
Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi Ji
With 53.7% of India’s population being below 25 years of age, India has a significant demographic advantage. To ensure that this population is provided with skills and training that will enhance their employability, the Government of India launched the ‘Skill India’ campaign.
The campaign promotes training in vocational and technical skills to ensure better livelihood opportunities for the country’s youth i.e. individuals between 15 and 24 years of age. It stresses on public-private partnerships where the private sector – corporate, non-governmental organizations, civil society and educational institutions – back the efforts of the Government.
Friends Union for Energizing Lives (FUEL) has been contributing to enhance livelihood opportunities for youth and reduce unemployment through formal education and training, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas of India since 2007.FUEL’s experience over the years has highlighted that financial support to students and improving educational infrastructure is just one aspect to addressing the challenge of poor educational opportunities for students from vulnerable sections of society. Another potent concern that needs to be addressed is the absence in students of a self-perception on skills, abilities and career interests.
To fuel this vision, they set up a Career Guidance and Skilling Center (CGSC) at Nagpur in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. The Center provides career guidance and skill development support through individual counseling and guidance and skilling, thus making a student’s transition from education to employment an easier one.
The primary target group i.e. the counselees will be students studying in secondary and higher secondary school, undergraduates, graduates and dropouts from the education system.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the ‘Skill India’ launch -
“In the coming years India will be the biggest supplier of workforce to the world”
“I call upon the nation to take a pledge to make india the skill capital of the world”
- Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister, Maharashtra -
Excerpts from Hon’ Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis’s Speech at Convocation ceremony, FUEL’s Nagpur CGSC. (25th March,2018)
In the era after LPG, government has become enabler as opposed to its earlier lead role in job creation.
It is the responsibility of the government now to provide skilled and healthy workforce to the industry.
India is, as rightly said, a nation of youths where 65% of its population is below the age of 35 and 50% is below 25 years.
Harnessing this vast human resource and ensuring that this demographic dividend does not become demographic drag, is utmost priority of any government.
Our Government, both at Centre and State, has accorded highest priority to skill development and launched “Skill India Mission”.
I really appreciate this unique initiative of FUEL along with HDFC Bank. I genuinely feel that this unique model of Career guidance and Skilling Center at Nagpur which counseled and skilled 10,000 youths of Nagpur should be replicated in all the remaining 35 districts of Maharashtra.
Inception : FUEL was started by Ketan Deshpande in 2007 with the main aim of encouraging students to pursue higher education in semi urban and rural areas in an around Pune city.
Ketan observed that one of the major hindrances for students from underprivileged and rural backgrounds faced was not only lack of financial support to pursue higher education; but also poor awareness on higher educational course available, colleges, availability of scholarships and on the larger front which profession would suit their aptitude and interest.
Our experience : Over the last 11 years we have observed that most Indian youth make career related decisions based on prevalent beliefs, availability of jobs, parent ’s knowledge, societal pressure etc. But post FUEL career support through parents and students counselling 86% of the students felt more empowered to articulate the career choices they wished to make, based on their personal interests and inherent aptitude. We have observed in the long run this leads to higher confidence level, greater productivity and job satisfaction among youth.
Through partners FUEL is currently also working toward economically empowering students through providing training in multiple vocational skills training and soft skills enabling underprivileged students in rural districts to undertake explore and undertake suitable employment or self-employment opportunities.
FUEL’s innovation lies in its ability to leverage technology to provide career counselling and relevant educational information support to over 10,00,000 students across 3500+ schools in 11 states on a continued basis.

Friends Union for Energising Lives (FUEL) The CGSC at Nagpur was inaugurated by Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on the 25th June 2017.
Vidarbha is one of the most drought prone region of India. And subsequently leading to the burning issues - the rising rates of unemployment due to a failure of agriculture and agrarian economy, the primary occupation in this region. At the same time, in the absence of employable skills, transition to secondary and tertiary sector was retarded leading to disguised employment.
Realizing that the largely agrarian economy needs to be supported by the knowledge economy, FUEL established a CGSC at Nagpur in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra to promote and motivate youth to take up alternative careers, develop their skills and secure the gainful employment.
