T h e p r o b l e m of e n g i n e e r i n g r e l i a b i l i t y in mining e q u i p m e n t s a n d s y s t e m s h a s b e e n l o o k e d i n t h e p a s t i n d i f f e r e n t w a y s p r i ma r i l y d u e to t h e v a r y i n g n a t u r e of r e q u i r e m e n t s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h e a c h s y s t e m . T h e a p p l i c a t i o n , r e l i a b i l i t y i n g e n e r a l a n d t h e r e f e r e n c e s i n p a r t i c u l a r d e s c r i b e d i n c h a p t e r X I a n d I I I r e s p e c t i v e l y .

T h u s i n s t a n t a n e o u s f a i l u r e r a t a or h a z a r d r a t e is d e p e n d e n t l i n e a r l y or n o n l i n e a r l y wi t h time. C o n s i d e r i n g t h a t t h e r e l i a b i l i t y d e c r e a s e s e x p o n e n t i a l l y o v e r time, t h e h a z a r d r a t e is u s e d to f i n d the o r i g i n a l e x p r e s s i o n of r e l i a b i l i t y . It m u s t be n o t e d t h a t the f a i l u r e f i g u r e s a r e d e r i v e d f r o m t he d a t a l o gs w h i c h a r e r e l a t i v e l y r e c e n t a n d t h u s r e l i a b i l i t y e x p r e s s i o n onl y g i v e s t h e c u r r e n t s t a t e of p e r f o r m a n c e unl i ke t h e e x p r e s s i o n of a b a t h - t u b c u r v e whi ch s p a n s o v e r t h e life of a n e q u i p m e n t . A ca.se s t u d y h a s b e e n d i s c u s s e d to d e t e r m i n e t he r e l i a b i l i t y e x p r e s s i o n f o r a g r o u p of e q u i p m e n t s i n a l ongwal l mining s y s t e m .

H e u r i s t i c mode l to d e t e r m i n e t he e l e c t r o n i c s y s t e m o pt i ma l r e l i a b i l i t y h a s b e e n in v o g u e f o r q u i t e s o me time.

T he m o d e l w i t h s u i t a b l e c h a n g e s may a l s o be a p p l i e d to d e s i g n a mine s y s t e m a t i t s opti mal c o n f i g u r a t i o n . T o a p p l y t hi s mode 1 i n a mi n e , t h e f i r s t s t e p is to d e v e l o p a minimal c o n f i g u r a t i o n o f a mine. T h e mine in e x a m p l e h a s f o u r

F o r a s e r i e s p r o d u c t i o n s y s t e m eg. a. l o n gwa l l f a c e a b u f f e r s t o r a g e a t a n o p t i ma l l o c a t i o n h e l p s i n i m p r o v i n g t h e a v a i l a b i l i t y of t h e t o t a l s y s t e m . A m a r k o v c h a i n mod e l f r o m a n e s t a b l i s h e d m e t h o d o l o g y c a n be u s e d t o d e t e r m i n e t h e e f f i c a c y o f t h e b u f f e r . S u c h a n a l y t i c a l s t u d y s h o w s t h a t a t a p a r t i c u l a r c o n d i t i o n o f f a i l u r e a n d r e p a i r t h e c o a l t r a n s f e r e f f i c i e n c y of mine c o n v e y i n g n e t w o r k c a n be i m p r o v e d a s h i g h a s 17

T h e i n f o r m a t i o n i n s t e a d of b e i n g p e r t i n e n t , c o m p r e h e n s i v e a n d a c c u r a t e g e n e r a l l y s e r v e s t h e p u r p o s e of d a y t o d a y f i l l i n g u p of t h e c u s t o m a r y m a i n t e n a n c e d a t a log b o o k s . T h e p r e s e n t w o r k a d d r e s s e s t h e b a s i c n e e d of a n i m p r o v e d s y s t e m a n d s u g g e s t s s o m e n e w f o r m a t s . B u t t h e e x t r a e x p e n d i t u r e is o f f s e t by t h e r e l a t i v e a d v a n t a g e g a i n e d i n t e r m s of h i g h e r a v a i l a b i l i t y .
