PAPER - I HISTORY OF NORTH-EAST INDIA (1228 to 1947)

Objective: The objective of this course is to provide basic knowledge of the Political and Historical events of the people of North-East India from the coming of the Ahoms to the end of the British period.

1 Coming of the Ahoms and foundation of the Ahom Kingdom in Assam.

2. Consolidation of the Ahom Kingdom - Contributions of Suhungmung and Pratap Simha.

3. Ahom - Tribal Relations - Major trends.

4. Decline of the Ahom Kingdom - Gadadhar Simha, Lakshmi, Simha; Moamaria Rebellion; Captain Welsh’s expedition; Anglo - Burmese War - Treaty of Yandaboo (1826).

5. Society, Economy and Culture during the Ahom Age.

6. Rise of British power in the North-East - Khasi, Jaintia, Cachar, Garo Hills, Naga Hills, Mizo Hills, Manipur and Tripura.

7. British relations with the North-East Frontier Tribes - Monpas, Akas, Sherdukpens, Nyishis, Adis, Apatanis, Khamptis, Mishmis, Singphos, Noctes, Wangchos and Tangshas.

8. Evolution of British colonial policy towards the Northeastern Hills - Inner Line, Outer Line, McMohan line.

9. Freedom struggle and the North-East, Revolt of 1857 and its impact in the North-East, Agragarian revolts, Civil Disobedience Movement; Quit India Movement.

10. Impact of Colonial Rule in the Society, Economy and Polity of the North-East India.

Unit-VI. Imperial Guptas: Samundragupta, Chandragupta II, Fahien, Socio-economic condi- tions - Gupta art, architecture and culture.

Unit-VII. Post-Gupta Period: Pallavas and Chalukyas.

Unit-VII. Foundations of Delhi Sultanate: Role of Slave Dynasty - Qutub-ud-din Aibak, Iltutmish, Tughlaq, Firz Shah Tughlaq.

Unit-IX. Disintegnation of Delhi Sultanate - conditions under the Delhi Sultanate - Society, Economy & Culture.

Unit-X. Vijayanagar Empire: Socio-Economic conditions, Administration,

contribution to Art & Culture.

PAPER - III: HISTORY OF INDIA FROM 1526 TO 1947

Objective

: This paper aims at making students aware of the Medieval and Modern India History. The board canvas of this paper includes political, economic and socio-cultural contours as well.

Unit-III Imperial Mughals. Akbar - New Concept of Monarchy, Religio-Polity outlook, Relation with Rajput, Din-e-Illahi. Mansabdari system - Akbar as a nation builder - Shahjahan - Art & Cultur.

Unit-IV Aurangzeb - Religion - Decean Policy - Rise of Marahattas - Decline of Mughal Empire.

Unit-V Advent of Europeans and struggle for supremacy, Rise and Consolidation of British Paramountcy in India: Warren Hastings - Expansion; Cornawallis - Permanent settlement; Lord Wellesely - Subsidiary Alliance.

Unit-VI Resistance of Indian power to British expansionism with reference to Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sindh and Mysore.
