Abstract : We study the response of an infinite system of point particles on a line initially at rest to the instantaneous release of energy in a localized region. First, we release the energy in the bulk. The hydrodynamic fields behind the symmetrically produced shock waves are obtained from self-similar solutions of the first kind of Euler hydrodynamics (TvNS solution). Second, we release the energy to the leftmost particle of the system of which the right half is uniformly filled with cold gas, reminiscences of a `break' in a half-filled infinite billiard. Here the shock front developed on the right side is described by self-similar solutions of the second kind of Euler hydrodynamics. The recoiled particles with negative velocities form a splash region which is completely non-hydrodynamic and we propose two conjectures for the long-time particle dynamics in this region. All analytical findings are supported by the results of molecular dynamics simulations.
