Abstract : The stick-slip dynamics of the peeling of an adhesive tape is characterized by bifurcations that have been experimentally well established (to the extent that they can emit X-rays in vacuum). The equations of motion constitute a constrained dynamical system in which the shear-adhesion constitutive relationship is an algebraic constraint and are thus a differential-algebraic equation (DAE) system. In this work we characterize the DAE model, showing that the high local differential index of the model leads to local nonlinear bifurcations during the stick-slip regime. In the process, it is shown that in the stick-slip phase with bifurcations, the peeling velocity of the tape changes exponentially faster compared to the rotation of the spool and stretch rate of the tape. We elucidate the time scale property with a temporal homogenization of the peeling velocity and related numerical simulations. Overall, the peeling dynamics is studied as an example of time-homogenization and bifurcations in high index DAE systems - issues that are not so well studied in existing literature but is important in many control problems, dynamics with holonomic constraints etc.
