SRI RAMACHANDRA UNIVERSITY SIGNS MOUs TO PROMOTE UMBILICAL CARD BLOOD DONATIONS &
HEALTH EDUCATION TO REDUCE INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY

Sri Ramachandra University today signed two MOUs, one to promote umbilical card blood donations for use in stem cell transplants and another to promote health care services to reduce infant and maternal mortality as part of its Founder‟s day and University Day celebrations.
Dr.A.Ravi, Medical Director, SRMC signed the MOU on umbilical card blood donations with Dr.P.Srinivasan, Chairman, Jeevan Stem Cell Bank and Dr.JSN Murthy, Vice Chancellor, SRU signed the MOU on health care promotion to reduce infant and maternal mortality with Dr.B.Sailakshmi, Founder Trustee, Ekam foundation. The MOUs were exchanged in the presence of Chancellor Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam.
Umbilical Cord Blood, discarded after childbirth, is one of the richest sources of blood forming stem cells and is being used across the world for over two decades for the treatment of children with blood cancers, Thalassemia and blood disorders with a success rate of over 60 to 80%.
Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) matching of the donor and the recipient is critical to the success of transplant of stem cells. Globally, HLA matching is dependent on the ethnicity of the patient and donor. In the absence of an Indian inventory of sufficient size, the chances of an Indian finding a match is less than 10% across the world. Even if lucky enough to find a match, it will cost the patient close to Rs. 20 lakhs to import the same.
“Approximately over 5,000 births are happening annually at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre alone. SRMC and Jeevan aim to create sufficient awareness on cord blood donation to collect as many cord blood donations as possible over the next 3 years. Professor J.S.N Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University said, “With the Pediatric Hemato-oncology unit under Dr Julius Scott and Dr.Aruna doing laudable service at Sri Ramachandra University, this partnership promises to pave the way for further therapy, like stem cell transplant for hematological diseases in both adults and children, in addition to developing super-specialty training programs in hemato-oncology in the future”. This programme, supported by a grant from Government of Tamil Nadu will help children from this state to find an easy match either free of cost or at an affordable fee for further treatment” said Dr. P Srinivasan, Co-Founder and Chairman of Jeevan Stem Cell Bank.
“Cord Blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta is collected after the umbilical cord is cut and the baby is removed for cleaning. After adequate preparation, the blood left in the cord is collected into a sterile bag and transported to Jeevan for further processing and storage. If not donated, this is being discarded” said Dr. Saranya Narayan, Co-Founder of Jeevan and the Medical Director.

By another MOU Sri Ramachandra University and Ekam Foundation an NGO joined hands in capacity building and knowledge updating of health care professionals, nurses and other paramedical personnel involved in providing health care services in neonatal, paediatric and obstetric disciplines, said Dr Dharmapuri Vidyasagar, Director of the Perinatal Center (SCOPE ) at SRU. Ekam facilitates quality healthcare to mother and children of poor families to reduce neonatal, infant and maternal mortality through community healthcare and field level health interventions.
Speaking on the occassion, Dr. B. Sailakshmi, Founder, EKAM said “ This MOU will open up the uncharted but much needed areas of research in the obstetric, pediatric and neonatal healthcare.
With the help of the research, we plan to develop inter–disciplinary educational and research programs on major health issues confronting these communities and in turn develop health policies relating to maternal, neonatal and child health. The research will also help in creating need based training and intervention.”
The Chancellor Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam distributed gold medals, cash awards and prizes to meritorious students. He felicitated Dr.Roy Santosham, Professor of Radiology for his invention and contributions that resulted in a US patent Precise Intelligent Guiding Arm (PIGA) in collaboration with Perfinct Healthcare, Chennai. PIGA is a robotic needle positioning apparatus coupled with computed tomography for facilitating high precision percutaneous needle placement. PIGA-CT system ensures patient comfort and lesser exposure to radiations and the procedure takes just about 20 minutes as against 45-60 minutes by traditional methods.
The Chancellor released two books– „Text book of Prosthodontics‟ co-authored by Dr.T.V.Padmanabhan, Professor of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dental Sciences and „Pharmacognosy – an Indian perspective‟ by Dr.K.Mangathayaru, Professor of Pharmacognosy, faculty of pharmacy. He also felicitated students who excelled in curricular, co-curricular and sports activities held outside the university and employees for their dedicated service. He commended the services of all of them for their excellence, perseverance and hardwork in bringing laurels to the organization.
Dr.T.K.Parthasarathy, Professor of Eminence and Chief Advisor distributed merit certificates for meritorious research publications. Dr.D.Kandaswamy, Dean, Sri Ramachandra Dental College paid rich tributes to the memory of Founder Chancellor, late Mr.NPV Ramasamy Udayar.
