Animal Vaccination Cum Health Camp held by ICAR, KVK, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya

An animal vaccination cum health camp was conducted in Marapara village of Dalu block of West Garo Hills, Meghalaya by ICAR-KVK, Tura, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya on 28th March 2019 under National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project. Mass vaccination of cattle and goats against Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) and Pigs against Swine Fever (SF) was carried out during the early hours of the programme. Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of all cloven- hoofed animals characterised by high fever that declines rapidly after two or three days, blisters inside the mouth that lead to excessive salivation and blisters on the feet that may rupture and cause lameness. Although not lethal in adult animals, it causes serious production losses. There is no specific treatment for this disease, only regular vaccination can protect the animals. Similarly, Swine Fever is a contagious, often fatal, disease of pigs characterized by high body temperature, lethargy, yellowish diarrhea, vomiting, and a purple skin discoloration of the ears, lower abdomen, and legs. SF has severe economic impact and potential to cause devastating epidemics. Vaccination is the only measure to control this fatal disease.

A total of 122 numbers cattle and 19 goats were vaccinated against FMD and 27 nos pigs were vaccinated against Swine Fever covering three villages:

Marapara, Sannengre and Bagugre. After completion of vaccination, treatment of the diseased animals was started. Skin infections including humpsore and maggoted wound were common problems in the village. Farmers were prescribed for different diseases of cattle, goats, pigs and poultry. Essential medicines along with mineral mixtures were also distributed among the participants.
