1.INTRODUCTION

From the very beginning human beings tend to learn from their surroundings which shape him as an individual, in India the education used to be imparted to the students in gurukuls and the mode of teaching was literature. Every subject whether it is theology or philosophy, all the subjects were taught in the form of storytelling, shlokas, and poetic form from our great scriptures. The reason behind this was to make student mentally physically and intellectually strong. The students were also taught spiritual teachings. The gurukuls were the center of education where the teacher was wholly responsible for the complete development of his students.

Apart from academics the students used to learn different types of skills for example: archery, fencing, horse riding etc. this would result into a generation of mature human beings to serve their nation with ace. With the course of time, their came social a political, economic and intellectual change in the society. As per the law of nature, the changes also came in teaching and learning process. New methods and techniques and arrival of new subjects replaced the existing education system.

After the arrival of British rule in India we can see a rapid change in education system. The spirit of serving the nation disappeared for, The English wanted to lessen their burden as they were facing a linguistic problem in a multi-linguistic country like India.

The Britishers wanted to cultivate clerks to help them with their trade and law and order in India in a smooth way.

Therefore, the modern education system came into existence and the whole pattern of education was change, it was known as Lord Macaulay’s education system.

Basically, they had nothing to do with Indian development and progress as a nation but they wanted Indians to serve them in their own language. Hence they

introduced English to our curriculums.

Even a teacher’s role is great in development of views of ancient kings and their kingdoms towards their nation, their citizens and humanity.

2. TEACHERS ROLE IN DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIETY

Teachers contribution to society is indelible, ours is the culture of devotion towards “guru”. Teachers and God are placed together in our culture which makes a teacher more responsible towards the development of his students.

But in the West we don’t find such eulogy.

Anyone can attain knowledge and information but wisdom can only be transferred by a teacher. Without the direction of a guide the path would lead nowhere. Doctor Faustus: one of the greatest tragedies by Christopher Marlow depicts the story of a very learned scholar

“Doctor Faustus” in medieval period which describes an infinite hunger for knowledge, as he read everything and had the command over all the subjects present on the earth at that time, in the quest of knowledge he was so desperate to learn anything that he did not even care for the consequences.

Now everything was finished and nothing was left to study. And later on he finds necromancy (black magic) a fit subject to study for himself. Without realizing its after effects he practiced it and falls prey to his horrific end. Here we can clearly see the difference between knowledge and wisdom. The role of teacher can be clearly perceived. Had there been proper guidance or a presence of a teacher in his life he might have escaped his dreadful end he met. Despite an exceptionally a bled scholar, he was utterly ignorant in the terms of true knowledge, the spiritual knowledge.

The knowledge which is not directed into right direction is like fire or a weapon which can harm individual as

2 well as the society. In the exchange of his own soul, he got twenty-four years of unlimited and untamed power. Initially he would imagine for the welfare of his nation as well as the Wittenberg university. He wanted to take some revolutionary steps for the betterment of education but he was deviated from his path and decreased his stature to the evil.

Apart from Doctor Faustus, the greatest poet of nature William words worth put much emphasis on the value of nature.

He perceives nature as guide and mother like figure. He personifies nature as a living entity, which is the best teacher.

He says that it’s not only the books which can teach us but we can learn from each every objet of nature like mountains, rivers, rocks, plains, stars, moon, sun, sky, clouds, brooks, trees, pebbles and others. The learning from nature would result into better human beings. They can learn patience from the rocks, bending from the trees like willow, freedom from clouds, spontaneity from water, activeness from the rivers, seriousness from sky, and sportive quality from animals like fawn. He puts emphasis on natural learning as it can turn man into a good human being and place him nearer to the God. He discards artificial knowledge and its purpose and encourages the education of nature.

3. TEACHER’S ROLE IN DIFFERENT PHASES OF LIFE OF A CITIZEN

“Teacher” the name indicates the person who teaches: intellectual, social and moral values to mankind. Our learning starts from the very early age. Usually family is called the first school to a child where a child learns by imitating from their parents and surroundings and his parents are the first teachers and the first ever lesson he learns is to speak, to speak a language, a language which is then called as his mother tongue. Children’s are the future of nation or we can say that children build’s nation in future. The children now are also the citizens of a country and nation is build up by its citizens. The quality of education defines future development of nation.

A teacher in an intangible aspect builds a nation. Teachings at different phases of life defines different types of development in child future, for instance at the early childhood a child learns his

mother tongue which is most probably the language of its nation. As India is a multi- linguistic country, we can find different types of languages in different parts and language is a primary identification in a multi-linguistic society. Morality is an another aspect, this is how a child learns to develop moral and social ethics. This is also necessary for his behavior towards society. He learns to make friends with different economic and religious status which is very necessary in development of multi- linguistic, secular nation like India.

Even it’s a teacher who tells a student’s parents that he is not doing well in examination so that their parents can be alert for necessary development of their child. As we grow, a teacher provides knowledge of science and technology, history, political and geographical sciences of his own country as well as world. The history of development of nation is very necessary to be known to each and every citizen. The combined knowledge of history and politics is that he can make choices after the age of 18

‘as the right to vote’. As a nations development plan is decided by governments, a citizen actually chooses in which direction development should go after knowing the promises of candidates before elections. In younger stage of life, a person develops knowledge with help of his teacher about his professional career which he opts either in science and technology, engineering, business, finance etc.

Hence a teacher produces professionals for the country, which is useful for in-house development of nation and this makes a country independent from knowledge and professional outsourcing. This results in establishing own research and development of nation.

Hence a teacher develops knowledge bank of nation. As a nation is a stable community of people within a boundary.

The progress of the community defines progress of nation and progress of community to a great extent depends on quality of education which solely dependent on teachers. With the passage of time a lot of changes can be perceived in the methods of teaching. ours is the age of information and technology and we can see a revolutionary change in the field of education too.

3 The students are exposed to the information technology with which they can get information they are not dependent on teachers for the purpose as in earlier times, the source of information and knowledge was a teacher.

Now it’s very challenging for a teacher to get along with the demands of time and how to convert that information into learning and wisdom. The teachers require to adapt new skills and methods applied in teaching to make his teaching more effective. The role of a teacher is multi-dimensional; he not only ensures the academic development of the student but also the social mannerism to survive in the society.

A teacher serves a torch bearer in the path of student’s life which connects him with the way to build a strong nation.

After the parents the students are influenced by their teachers the most. The reason behind this is that a student is fascinated by the teacher’s personality, etiquettes and behavior. It would not be exaggeration to say that teachers are like celebrities in their lives to follow, a role model indeed.

4. TEACHERS ROLE IN DEVELOPMENT OF KNOWLEDGE BANK

For a civilized nation, a nation requires civilized citizens. We are the nation of the earliest and glorious civilizations in the world. Under the guidance of teachers, a nation gets a complete civilized generation in the form of various professions like doctors, lawyers, engineers, professors and other professionals for the next generation to come, they carry forward the legacy of their learning tradition and culture to another generation. A teacher enlightens his students not only with theoretical knowledge but enhance their learning by his own learning’s and experience. A teacher has most responsible and dignified space in the society which credits him to be a creator of tomorrows nation.

A sculptor shapes the sculptures with his utmost skill and ability and minutely with passion so that a beautiful object may come out in shape. The same way a teacher also shapes his students through his hard work and passion, he undergoes so many methods and techniques to deal with different type of students according to their learning

abilities. Their immature minds are strengthened so that they may be able to have the responsibility of the nation tomorrow. Teacher imparts education to the students which leaves an everlasting impact on them and keeps them inspire.

A good teacher not only imparts knowledge but also inspire to aspire for greater dreams and aims in their lives.

From an early age to adulthood a student come across so many teachers and different levels of education in his life.

The purpose of a teacher should not only be academic success of the students but an overall development of the soul with purity, integrity and honesty. Spiritual development is the main object of learning for human beings are the only race who can use reason and differentiates between good and evil. The teacher teaches the students about life skills to be a better fit in the world. To a great extent the character of a student is determined in this very age. The teacher induces human qualities like love, compassion, obedience, respect and honesty etc. which are the requirements to build a strong nation.

The teacher helps the student to understand the true purpose of life.

Because the young minds are full of so many innovative ideas as well as confusions. They are store house of new ideas full of enthusiasm and vigor but directionless. It requires a great pain for a teacher to direct their ideas into correct direction towards the development of their own and nation. The teacher is the one whom a student can bank upon, whenever he is in problem whether it is academic, professional or personal a teacher brings out the best even in an ordinary student and prepares him for the future struggle. He functions like a life giving force to the young generation of a nation and make them realize for their potential.

4 a nation. For which education from basics is necessary to be imparted to students to develop their interest for research and development activities. There is a great role of teachers for making scientists as teaching is a most challenging job for them to updated with new principles and technologies and also making their students updated with new fundamentals of science, basics behind new technology development and to tell them demerits and improvements needed in these new technologies.

It becomes easy for a student to learn the toughest principles, the science or mathematics behind them in a easy way, however a teacher needs to be always in research mode to develop the easiest ways to tell them. It’s the efforts of our teachers that we are developing in the areas of space, defense, information technology, agricultural automation, industrial automation etc. The indirect role of a teacher can never be neglected in development of science and technological advancement for a nation which is an important pillar for national development these days as this is an era of science and technology.

6. CONCLUSION

From the above facts, it can be reiterated that a teacher has a great role in nation building he is the foundation of all aspects needed for nation building. A teacher develops human resources for a nation and a nation’s development is approximately 65% dependent on dependent on its human resources. Apart from human resources, a teacher develops social structure for a nation. For example, equality in society in terms of religion, cast color etc. can be established by teachers only, in these days’ equality is also an identity for a country in global terms it’s a major factor in making allies, improving friendships and improving tourism for a nation.

In the era of globalization, it’s the professionals like doctors, lawyers, scientists, information technology experts also sportspersons, who create identity of a nation globally and this identity is intangibly developed by Teachers of that country. A citizen will feel proud when his nation is proud full, a nation will be proud when he is able to justify life values, moral values and duties. And

nation will feel to justify its moral and life value’s and duties when a citizen will be able to deliver his moral and life duties, and these moral and life duties will be imparted by a teacher. In contrast a teacher is a true builder of an ethical, strong, developed and amused nation.
