STUDY OF DIET AND NUTRITION OF WOMEN ATHLETE AND NON ATHLETE Dr. Jinendra Boudh

Abstract - The major aim of this paper was to highlight the issues related to women’s sports Nutrition, diet and food habits among the women athlete and non-Athletes. To keep the key point in center as the diet and nutrition knowledge is very essential for women athlete more than men athletes due to the anatomical and physiological demand. A short survey was made to find the nutritional awareness between female as this is needed to reach the peak performance. The athletes who had participated IUT, through west University, Meerut, were consider for the survey. It was found that, Most of (88%) women athletes were not aware regarding their proper Diet and Nutrition uses, during rest, training, and competition period. Only (12%) women athletes were aware regarding their Diet and Nutrition uses, and were following the same as compared to non-Athletes. A sound working knowledge & pragmatic approach to nutrition & performance will increase the likelihood that nutritional recommendation will be implemented. The proper knowledge of food, nutrition and diet for woman will provide sufficient subtract to obtain the energy necessary for work, physical activity and relaxation.

1 INTRODUCTION

As we enter in 21st century it is the best time in history to be born female. In the last 10 years, more progress has been made in the lives of women than was achieved in all the years prior to 1900.

Women are now changing their attitude toward the society. Women now have political, social, educational, sports &

economic opportunities that were denied them for centuries, however, these rights are not enjoyed equally around the world but slowly for too slowly in some nations change for women is beginning to be felt.

Over the last twenty years there has been an increase in women’s participation in sport and physical activity, at par men.

There has been a growing understanding that participation in sports and movement activity is not only a right in itself but also be used to promote health awareness, education, social status, fame and popularity, political development, and peace and self defense, and more importantly carrier.

The marvelous performance in Commonwealth game and Asian games by Indian women athlete are raising a new horizon for up coming athlete and motivating strongly them to join the splendor life of sports.

2 WOMEN IN SPORTS

Girls and women can successfully compete in strenuous activities without suffering physiologic or psychological harm. There are physiologic, anatomic, and psychologic differences between

males and females, but theses differences make participation in all forms of athletics no less beneficial for females then for males. The average women’s performance in athletics is below that of a man’s but some women athletes can beat the performance of most male. The performances of champions in commonwealth games Delhi today exceed the winning times of females participant.

However, the important issue is not whether man or women are better performers. The important issue is whether women should compete in athletics and experience the satisfaction and joy of knowing that they are the best in their class and event.

Sports participation is associated with less risk of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating among adolescent girls.

It is also associated higher self esteem.

Exercise has been shown to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, body composition, fatigue, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, happiness and several components of quality of life (physical , functional and emotional) in cancer survivors.(Brown, J.K et al 2003).

Women who participates the same well- designed strength training program as men do benefit from bone and soft tissue modeling, increased lean body mass, decreased fat and enhanced self- confidence.

To study about food, diet and nutrition is directly connected to home science and allied disciplines. At home female eats at par the family requirements and availability of resources. There is not any following a particular or specific diet plan, calories uptake nutritional values, demand etc. The study and practice of nutrition and diet as it relates to athletic performance is very important. A sound working knowledge & pragmatic approach to nutrition & performance will increase the likelihood that nutritional recommendation will be implemented.

Healthy body and mind is basic requirement of health standards all over the world. The basic elements of home science knowledge of dietary and nutrition must be applied to keep the people healthy. It deals with uses of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, supplements and organic substances.

The idea of diet and exercise is in existing since the evolution of man kind.

4 WOMEN AND DIET

Healthy body & mind is basic requirement of health standards all over the world. knowledge of sound & relevant principles to people regarding diet &

nutrition, eating habits of the people may be moved towards taking good economic tasty and nutrition’s foods able to fulfill not only daily energy requirements of body but also to keep the body & mind healthy. A well balanced diet consummates a sufficient supply of protein, carbohydrate, fats, salts and minerals.

A diet should be adopted that includes increasing amounts of raw food stuff e.g. green salad. Vegetable and dairy products honey. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices are also excellent for health. As same as women who play sports usually know whether their sports require rigorous diet regiments.

Diet problems in woman sports refer mostly to decrease in the consumption of food high in energy, fat and protein. Female athletes should pay very special attention to their diet because their food important when it comes to improve their performance. They also need to meet certain energy need and reduce problems cause by taking on poor diet. In terms of diet, it is recommended to always have an adequate caloric intake

while practicing their sports. With the help of these things we can study and to sort out the problems which are highly affecting for woman players.

A short survey was conducted to find the nutrition and diet knowledge among university women athletes who participated in deferent sports during 2010. To support the subject a self made questionnaire was used by author for data collection. Total 50 women athletes were selected randomly for the survey.

The all samples were taken from deferent affiliated colleges of west University, Meerut, District of Uttar Pradesh state.

4.1 Objectives of the study

 To find out the Diet and Nutrition knowledge among women athlete and Non-Athletes.

 To study the significance differences in diet and nutrition regarding the enhancement of performances in sports.

5 METHODOLOGY

A self made questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was collocated individually through questionnaire and were filled up from women athlete, of various colleges affiliated to the west University, Meerut.

6 FINDINGS

Structured questions were asked in the survey, and at last the following findings were drown.

 Most of (88%) women athletes were not aware regarding their proper Diet and Nutrition uses, during rest, training, and competition period.

 Only (12%) women athletes were aware regarding their Diet and Nutrition uses, and were following the same.

 Every Human being must about what to eat or no not to eat.

Nutrition is the process be consuming, absorbing and using nutrients need by the body for growth, development and the maintenances of life.

A well balanced diet consummates a sufficient supply of protein, carbohydrate, fats, salt and minerals.

 20 to 25 % fat consumption is needed for energy to boost the performance.
