“TERRACE GARDENS” UTILIZATION OF TERRACES FOR GREEN FUTURE: A REVIEW Dr. SK Goyal

HOD of Public Administration, Shri Neelkantheshwar Government PG College, Khandwa (M.P) Abstract - In today’s urban environment high rise of buildings, parking areas, network of roads have acquired major urban land. In such congested environment rooftop and terrace of buildings provide a valuable potential source of outdoor space accessible to users of building.

The purpose of this study is to give an insight into what motivates middle-class citizens to engage in gardening. Balcony and terrace gardens give pleasure to city dwellers and provide an opportunity for enhancing creativity as well psychological benefits. In addition, they change the visual appearance of the building, screening from neighbours and unappealing scenery.

Therefore, the goal of our study is to thoroughly examine the impact of terrace gardening. Numerous ecosystem services are provided by terraces, such as improvement of grain yields and soil moisture levels, as well as the reduction of runoff and slit. The main goal of this study is to examine consumer perceptions and difficulties of organic terrace gardens in khandwa, Madhya Pradesh.

In the light of this, the purpose of this article is to evaluate terrace gardening’s benefits, and offer preventive and corrective actions to minimize any potential negative effects for the purpose of relaxation and decreases recorded in global Warming is the greatest benefit.

Keywords: Roof garden, sustainability, Roof Top Gardening, eco-design, Benefits of Terrace Garden.

Objectives

1. To know the factors inspired for terrace gardening.

2. To delineate a general feature of roof top gardening.

Scope

The purpose of this study is to give an insight into what motivates middle - class citizens to engage in gardening. The Indian middle classes are described as well educated with busy, stressful lives and with high resource use due to consumption, however also with increasing awareness and practices of pro – environmental behavior. Serious environmental problems have become obstacles to the development of city, how to expand the green area, reduce the pollution of the environment to improve the urban ecological environment, promote the sustainable development of the city, has become a top priority in the construction of cities today.

Statement of Problem

The first problem we have is the high cost of living in limited space. And also in order to minimize pollution and noise, CO2 emission absorption and urban heat control, it is important to contribute to the enhancement of biodiversity in the urban environment and to resolve the lack of vacant land for cultivation. The rooftop gardening concept is the only successful measure that has been proven to be practiced and established day by day throughout the world. For many years, the construction of the roof garden has been without a standard model and a standard process, exposing many defects and short comings. For example: cannot prevent leakage, loss of soil and water, the serious pollution, the unreasonable arrangement of plants, the exceeds of load, the exceeds of the construction cost. Specially old building, because of the lacking consideration, the roof in the old building was not suitable for the construction of the roof garden. Due to the original design without considering the load and roof garden drainage, makes the structure safety reserve is insufficient, drainage pipe diameter is not enough, the design difficulty is greater. Once these problems are solved, the construction of roof garden in our country will be developed rapidly.

1 INTRODUCTION

Terrace gardening is a relatively new idea. Terrace gardening is a living work of art in which the plants are arranged on a terrace. It also consists of indoor or outdoor plants. In many different nations and in different climates, green roof technology has its roots. A building protected by a plant ensures adequate protection against hot or cold weather. In sustainable architecture, green roofs have become an essential feature. In reality, green roofs are expanding

The trend of terrace garden is not new, for centuries it has been common to use rooftops as a living space/Recreational space. A growing number of elevated structures that deny their occupants any visual contact with nature have increased the need for terrace gardens. Terrace gardens moderately restore the lost bond between humans and nature.

“Having your own garden can bring you both happiness and bounty.

The real wealth of a good gardener is not his salary, But The marvelous flowers he is raising in the garden!”

One of the most important reasons to create roof gardens is the aesthetic view of the green area in the city, which is contributing to the quality of life of the citizens. Green roofs absorb storm water, reducing runoff by at least 50% and filter polluted runoff water before it enters in drains, rivers and lakes. Pollution is sucked out of the air by plants in the garden, thus reducing air pollution and dust. Roof gardens are one of the most innovative and cost-effective ways cities can use to improve the degrading urban environment.

Roof gardens have been proven to reduce the effects of the urban heat, the result of sunlight reflected off concrete and other reflective materials, which can make summer air in dense cities upto 10° hotter than in rural areas. More energy has to be used to cool buildings and more air pollution is created in the form of smog. Roof top gardens keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Air conditioning costs are cut down and roof gardens can cool the whole city by several degrees in summer.

Green roofs can be divided into three categories:

1. Spontaneous green roofs.

2. Extensive green light weight roofs with low maintenance, without additional irrigation and fertilizing.

3. Intensive green roof = roof gardens.

Extensive roofs are those that require little maintenance, are established over the majority of the roof area and generally contain low – growing, drought and extreme weather – tolerant plants; Intensive roofs require high maintenance, may or may not cover the majority of the roof and usually contain a variety of plants, such as small trees or shrubs. The term roof top garden (RTGs) will be used for gardens built on a roof that has a same material constituents as a backyard garden planted with small – scale crops.

Vol. 08, Special Issue 04, March 2023 IMPACT FACTOR: 8.20 (INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL) 36 Flowers have a soothing effect and lift your mood with their colours and fragnance. We can grow hibiscus, frangipani, marigold, periwinkle, rose, etc., which will add colour to their rooftop garden. We can grow flowers in garden boxes and hang them along the railings. Nurture flowers on the rooftop garden to attract native bees and other beneficial insects. Flowers such as bougainvillea, jasmine, gardenia, clematis, rangoon creeper, hibiscus, rose, oleander, and plumerias can be grown in planters. To attract butterflies, grow plants like clitoria, parijat, adenium, lantana vincas, and honey suckle.

3 WATERPROOF THE ROOF AND ENSURE IT HAS A GOOD DRAINAGE SYSTEM AND SLOPE Before planning a roof top garden, ensure the roof is water proof with no leakage. Apply some coverage techniques or chemical water proofing solutions by consulting an expert. This will help solve seepage of water into walls or roofs, which can cause dampness or other damages.

Proper drainage of planters is vital for their growth. It is recommended to place them on brick stands. A mosaic of broken china tiles can also give protection against seepage. The best way to create a slope is to install concrete bedding to divert water towards drains. Ensure good drainage system during heavy rainfall.

4 GREEN ROOF FOR FUTURE HEALTHY CITIES

Green roofs can improve improve the health of cities. Germany, the US, Canada, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong are developing green roofs in cities to reduce the negative impact of construction activities and encourage urban farming. Cities need growth and development but it should be sustainable. The concept

of green buildings is gaining momentum in Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

State governments are developing green building policies to make it mandatory to implement rain water harvesting, use of solar panels and make roof top gardens popular. For example, the BMC, Mumbai has proposed to make it mandatory for all new buildings having a plot size of more than 2,000 square meters to plant roof top/terrace gardens. This policy will help in increasing the green cover areas, which is reduced due to unavailability of land.

5 BENEFITS OF ROOFTOP/TERRACE GARDENING

Green roofs are attractive and ecologically beneficial. They offer several practical advantages to an uncovered roof:

 The reduction of runoff water (no peaks of rain water to be evacuated through drains).

 The protection of the roof construction against mechanic and thermic effects ( isolation for U.V. rays of the sunlight and temperature changes)

 Buffering against heating in summer and cooling in winter

 The absorption of noise.

 The creation of new ecological sites for settlements of local flora and fauna in the city, since a lot of species are brought in by wind and birds

 Growing plants on terrace may reduce carbon monoxide and good for the environment as well.

 Terrace gardening or rooftop gardening requires less maintenance.

 Terrace gardening is a stress burster

 Growing plants on the terrace can get lots of sun. If needed, a shade net can be used for nShade - loving plants.

The environmental benefits observed includes storm-water run off management, energy conservation through temperature stabilization, and urban habitat preservation, although other benefits such as aesthetic values and biodiversity has also been noted.

One can have visions of covering a city’s vacant roofs with flowers. It should be known by municipal authorities that roof top gardening is having a lot of benefits. It has a potential to survey local needs in many circumstances. One of the greatest benefits of roof top gardens is their nearness to their citizens. People with a cultivated roof space on their house do not have to travel to a public garden or an urban park. Roof gardens on community centre roofs a big warehouses, for example, could help visitors to find a relaxing green area in their immediate neighbourhood.
