Assignment solution- Week 8

(1) LetA be a subring of B such thatB is integral over A. Let n be a maximal ideal of A. Is Bn necessarily integral over Am, where m=n∩A?

Solution : Let A = k[x2 −1] and B = k[x]. Then B is integral over A. Note that n = (x−1) is a maximal ideal in B and m= (x2−1) is a maximal ideal in A with m=n∩A. Suppose x+11 ∈Bn is integral over Am. Then there exists n >0,asi

i ∈Am

such that

1

(x+ 1)n + an−1

sn−1

1

(x+ 1)n−1 +· · ·+ a0

s0 = 0.

After clearing the denominators we get z

n

X

i=0

aiti(x+ 1)n−i = 0,

wherean= 1,ti =sn−1· · ·si−1si+1· · ·s0, 0≤i≤n−1,tn=sn−1· · ·s0 andz ∈B\n.

We have

za0t0(x+ 1)n+· · ·+ztn = 0 which implies that

(x+ 1){za0t0(x+ 1)n−1+· · ·+zan−1tn−1}=−ztn.

Thereforex+1|ztn. Sincex+1 is a prime element,x+1|z,z ∈(x+1)B∩A= (x2−1).

This is contraction tof ∈B\n. Therefore (x+1)1 is not integral over Am. (2) Let B be an integral extension ofA. Prove that

(a) Ifx∈A is a unit in B, then it is a unit in A.

Solution. Since B is integral over A, 1/xsatisfies 1

xn +a1 1

xn−1 +· · ·+an = 0,

where ai ∈A, for 1≤i≤n. Now multiply by xn−1, we get 1

x +a1+· · ·+an−1xn−2+anx(n−1) = 0,

and 1

x =−(a1+· · ·+an−1xn−2+anx(n−1)∈A.

Thereforex is a unit in A.

(b) the Jacobson radical of A is the contraction of the Jacobson radical of B. Solution. LetJAand JB be Jacobson radical of AandB respectively. We need to prove that JA =JB∩A. Let x∈JB∩A. Then for anya∈A, 1 +ax∈A is a unit in B. By (a), 1 +ax is a unit in A. Therefore x∈JA.

1

(2)

Letx∈JA. For a maximal ideal mB of B, n=mB∩A is a maximal ideal inA.

Thereforex∈n =mB∩A⊆mB. Hence x∈JB∩A.

(3) If A is an integral domain, then prove that A is integrally closed in A[x]. Give an example of A such that A is not integrally closed in A[x].

Solution. Supposef(x) = bmxm+bm−1xm−1+· · ·+b0 ∈A[x]\A,bm 6= 0, is integral overA. Then there is a monoic polynomialg(t) =a0+a1t+· · ·an−1tn−1+tn∈A[t]

such that g(f(x)) = 0. Therefore

bnmxmn+· · ·+ (an+an−1bn−10 +· · ·+bn0) = 0.

Hence bnm = 0 so thatbm = 0. This is a contradiction to the assumption thatbm 6= 0.

Therefore A is integrally closed in A[x].

Consider A=Z4 andf(x) = 2x+ 2∈Z4[x]. Note that f(x)2 = 0. Thereforef(x) is integral over A but f(x)∈/ A.
