Competencies will continue to be reviewed and revised. The dynamic state of health care technology and scientifi c discovery requires constant surveil- lance of the relevance and adequacy of the outcome competencies. The CUSN DNP competencies provide a blueprint for educational content and graduate certifi cation of a clinical nursing doctorate. The establishment of this doctoral level of education, with well-defi ned and distinctive competencies, will contrib- ute to quality and access to comprehensive care.

The Columbia University School of Nursing doctor of nursing practice (CUSN DNP) curriculum is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses as comprehensive care providers and applies a competency-based approach to educate and to evaluate DNP students. The CUSN competencies of a doctor of nursing practice in comprehensive care (see Table 2.1) form the frame- work for the curriculum and are integrated throughout the coursework and practica. The direct care competencies are linked to performance objectives that students are expected to achieve and to substantiate in written clinical case narratives.
