Effects of boron on pollen characteristics two cultivars of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus)

The rate of germination and the growth of pollen tube is one of the aspects of the growth and development of the plants which is very important in fertilization and formation of the fruit.
Among the different elements, boron has an important role in the germination and the growth of pollen tube i.e. this element is regarded as a structural requirement in the development of pollen cell walls. In this study, the effect of boron (in the concentrations of 0, 100, 200, 300 mg per liter) has been studied on the characteristics of germination and the growth of pollen tube of two cultivars of sour cherry including torsh daneshkadeh and siah mashhad in in-vitro culture conditions. The results showed that the different concentrations of boric acid had no significant effect in the length of pollen tube but had a significant effect on the germination of pollen of two cultivars of sour cherry. By increasing the boric acid concentrations, the rate of the germination of pollen has increased in the torsh daneshkadeh cultivar. In siah mashhad cultivar, it has increased up to 100 ppm concentration but the more concentrations have caused to decrease the rate of germination in this cultivar.
