Comparison of deltoid musclesactivity in the arm abduction and scaption between three shooting fields

Abstract

Introduction: Considering the position that shooters in different fields take during shooting, it seem that deltoid muscles are commonly involved in the shooting perform and each has a relative role in each field. It can be expected that the activities of these muscles involved in shooting action to be different among shooting different fields. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the anterior, middle and posterior deltoid musclesactivities in the arm abduction and scaption between three shooting fields including archery, pistol and air rifle.

Materials and Methods: 24 shooters (8 archer, 8 pistol shooters and 8 air rifle shooters) 20- 40 years old with more than 3 years of professional training history were participated in the study. The subjects were performed arm abduction and scaption to the 60 and 90 degrees with dominant hand. The electrical activity of anterior, middle and posterior deltoid muscles were recorded using surface electromyography. ANOVA test was used for comparison of difference among groups.

Results:The results of this study showed that the activity of the anterior deltoid muscle in the 60 and 90 degree shoulder abduction was significantly more than the air pistol. Also, the activity of the deltoid middle muscle was significantly higher in the archery group than in the pistol group only in position of 90 degree of abduction. But, in the activity of deltoid posterior muscle didn’t indicate any significant difference in any of the two abduction and scaption positions in three groups.

Discussion and conclusion: The higher deltoid anterior andmiddle activities in the archery field could be related to, stretching force of string of bow and the greater hand angle in the shoulder joint during the performance of this type of shooting as well as the greater upward scapular rotation pistols and air rifles fields. However, it seems that deltoid posterior muscle played a role approximately similar in all three fields.
