SUMMER PROGRAME LEARNING THROUGH CHEMISTRY @ USM

SUMMER PROGRAMME

THE PROGRAMME is hosted by the School Of Chemical Sciences (PPSK) in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang and taught by academic staff from schools within USM. The program is one of the international mobility programs carried out at the School of Chemical Sciences annually to promote the expertise and services available. The programme widen the international network in supporting USM’s aspiration to become a world-renowed institution of Higher Learning being a relevant, respected and referred.

THE objectives of the programme is to promote and introduce the expertise and services provided by the Scool of Chemical Sciences ; which are led by lectures in various fields of chemistry. The programme focuses on exposing foreign student to knowledge of chemistry learning, particulary in the use of microscale applications, the exposure on the basic science of glassmaking through the glass blowing workshop, the introduction of herbal and plant extract in Malaysia using chemical concept.

There will be six non-credited courses designed together with practical classes by academic staff such Microscale Chemistry, Glass Blowing Technique, English for Communication,

Malaysian Plants : Herbs and spices, Mindfulness Workshop, Organic Composting Sciences and Malaysia Cultural activities. Student will be based at Universiti Sains Malaysia main campus in Penang Island. These programs will combine both features of learning class and hands on in laboratories. Classes and discussions will take place in formal and informal settings.

At the end of the programme students willl be able to:

THE uniqueness of this programme is it offers

‘homestay’ (optional) where the student had opprtunity to stay at lectures’ home. The lectures were delighted to offer accommodation for them and give the the opportunity to know the culture of Malaysia closer. In addition, this programme also provides opportunities to all staff in the School of Chemical Sciences to interact with the international student in the “kenduri@Kimia” event in which they prepare and grilled sate, “bubur lambuk”,ais kacang, roti jala, mee goreng and varieties of traditional food in Malaysia with the ‘gotong- royong’ spirit. Several outdoor activities were also demonstrated such as making ‘roti canai, karipap and teh tarik sessions, pottery. Malaysian traditional crafts and visit to the herbs garden as well fruit orchid at the university.
