Establishment of the Basis for International Cooperation on Ocean Science

. Project purpose and needs

Ⅱ

Recently, many large-scale, international, cooperation programs have been

◦

launched related to global environmental issues such as climate change, etc.

Most of these programs are led by countries with expertise in marine science including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, etc.

A new national strategy is needed for ROK to participate in international

◦

cooperation programs because ROK's efforts in these areas are not representative enough considering our strength in research and economic power.

Based on the UN Law of the Sea, national coordination is essential to

◦

protect economic regions and resources.

This project aims at establishment of the basis for international cooperation

◦

through capacity building, participation in international cooperation projects, and planning new programs related to technology transfer.

. Project contents and scope

Ⅲ

Participation in international cooperation projects in order to define the new

◦

trends and develop partnerships with leading countries in marine science and technology.

This project would establish regional centers and/or contact points by

◦

developing regional joint cooperation projects.

Establish new strategies to cope with the requirement of the UN Law of the

◦

Sea and strengthen our diplomatic capability.

Expansion of networking through hosting international conferences and

◦

meetings.

Provide training for international cooperation experts on marine science and

◦

technology through participation in international organizations such IOC, etc.

Provide for the KOC secritariat to play a leading role in the establishment

◦

of clearinghouse for marine science information.
