Customers see only the flaws in mail delivery. They never appreciate the huge effort that makes the service both speedy and efficient. For an absurdly small price, you can send mail anywhere in the country, from Hawaii to Alaska. You’d think this would impress most people, but no. Instead of thanking us for services rendered, they whine and complain about the few times the mail gets lost. And just because a few members of the Postal Service have engaged in violent behavior, people now use the insulting expression ‘going postal’ to refer to unexpected outbreaks of violence brought on by stress. This phrase unfairly insults the rest of us hardworking employees who do our jobs day in and day out without complaint.

Despite its rapid spread, Islam is not a religion for those who are casual about . Muslims must rise before dawn to observe the first of five prayers required daily, none of which can take place without first ritually cleansing oneself.

Sleep, work, and recreational activities take second place to prayer. Fasting for the month of Ramadan, undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime, paying tax for relief of the Muslim poor, and accepting Islam’s creed require a serious and energetic commitment. On the whole, the vast majority of Muslims worldwide do observe those tenets.

The Nile Valley dwellers also created a system of measures. They needed a system to figure out fair exchanges in the marketplace. The Egyptians used the length of a forearm to measure cloth. They called that length a cubit.

However, problems arose because the lengths of people’s arms were different. A short arm was good for the seller. A long arm was good for the buyer. To make a trade, the buyer and the seller had to . The Egyptians decided a cubit would be the length of the forearm of the pharaoh or king.

We read a wonderful novel and the characters are alive in our minds even days and weeks later. What the characters have done and said lives in us, telling us something about ourselves. We put poems in our memories so we can call up the impact of the words at will. We stand in front of a powerful painting or watch the accomplished musician bedazzled, as if the artist had turned a spotlight on some aspect of life we had seen but never really examined. And once the museum doors close, the book covers are shut, and the music stops, that spotlight remains, allowing us to see in new ways, to get behind the artist’s mental eye and ear and hand.

Many Americans think of lie detectors as machines that can, without error, separate the guilty from the innocent. But nothing could be further from the truth. Lie detectors can and do make errors. For example, the people in charge of lie detectors are not necessarily experts. Many states do not employ licensed examiners who have been trained to read and interpret the lie detector’s print-out. In addition, many subjects react to a lie detector test by becoming anxious. As a result, their bodies behave as if they were lying even when they are telling the truth. On the other hand, some subjects are smart enough to use relaxation techniques or tranquilizers to maintain the appropriate calm, even when they are telling a string of lies.

북미의 빙하 운동에 관한 설명 중, 다음 글의 내용과 일치하지 않는 것은?

Millions of years ago, part of North America was covered with glaciers. The movement of these glaciers helped shape the geography of this area. A glacier is a snowfield of compressed ice. When a glacier reaches the depth of 100 feet, it becomes too heavy to stay in place. It moves down the slope it is on. As the glacier moves, it tears away masses of rock and land. Sometimes it leaves behind a lake or series of lakes.

Most often, a glacier leaves behind a valley. New England and New York were once flat land covered with glaciers. The movement of the ice carved deep valleys between what are now the Adirondack Mountains, the Green Mountains, and the White Mountains. Now these areas have many valleys surrounded by mountains.

In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers in France sent some animals up in a balloon. For this occasion, King Louis XVI came to the town of Annonay, where the Montgolfiers lived.

The brothers put a duck, a rooster, and a sheep in a basket attached to the bag. Then they sent the whole thing into the air. The bag stayed up for eight minutes, and landed safely.

Plans were quickly made for a man to go up. The king was willing to provide a criminal who had been sentenced to death for the experiment. However, the king’s historian said that he would be honored to go himself. A month later, the balloon was ready. Under the balloon they erected a platform large enough for a man, a fire pan, and damp straw that could burn slowly to provide the necessary heat and smoke. The experiment was a big success.

One group of rats heard a buzzer about ten seconds before they would receive a shock; although the animals could not escape the shock, at least they had a chance to prepare themselves for the expected pain. A second group of rats received no such warnings; the shocks came unpredictably.

The rats who were forewarned of the shocks developed fewer ulcers than the rats who were not forewarned. This finding has parallels in human life. The death of a loved one, for example, is usually less traumatic when it is anticipated than when it is unexpected. Ways of thinking in the East and the West go all back to ancient China and ancient Greece. In the West, people have always respected independent thought. The Greeks loved debate. Because they made their living by herding animals and fishing, the Greeks were independent. On the other hand, in China, where people have always lived in a close society, there was no real tradition of public debate. Likewise, the Korean society was based on rice farming. It needed a lot of water, and everyone had to share it equally. It also required teams of people working together at the same speed. All of this meant that individuality was not encouraged.

We know we must replace coal, oil, and gas with renewable sources of energy. But how? The answer used to be ‘go nuclear,’ but nuclear power has proved to be prohibitively expensive. Hydropower sounds clean, but you have to flood valleys. Much is heard of wind, wave and solar power.

Unfortunately, intermittent energy sources need to be backed up by conventional power, for the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine. Even more problematically, manufacturing the hardware that such sources of power require can use up almost as much energy as they generate.

Put a solar panel on your roof, and it will spend its first eight years replacing the conventional energy that was needed to make its frame.

I am sometimes questioned about uncovering ancient burial sites which, critics say, shows no respect for the dead. The sad reality, though, is that the looting of such sites by treasure hunters is inevitable-even in remote, high places like Amppato. I believe that meticulous archaeological analysis of burial sites and permanent protection of their contents in national or academic institutions are both essential and respectful. This belief is shared by the indigenous people of the Colca Canyon area, who have expressed support for our work. The disrespectful alternative-the plunder of our human heritage for profit or for no reason at all-is unacceptable.

The lack of historical data has caused some literary experts to question whether William Shakespeare really wrote the works attributed to him. Skeptics cite a number of arguments to support their belief that Shakespeare, the playwright, was really someone else. First, fourteen plays have scenes that take place in Italy and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of Italian society and politics. However, there is no record of Shakespeare’s ever traveling to Italy. Skeptics also argue that the level of vocabulary and language used in Shakespeare’s works reflects the writings of a highly educated person with a good understanding of law, politics, and history. Yet there is no record of Shakespeare’s ever attending a university.

People who are deaf have unique challenges. Unlike blind people with seeing-eye dogs or white walking sticks, deaf people do not show any outward signs that they cannot hear.

Drivers may use their horns without any effect. Trains may be announced over public address systems, but people who can’t hear never hear the announcements. Sirens go unnoticed.

Hearing people who try to communicate with those who can not hear may be cruel without meaning to because they think these people are not paying attention. A ringing phone, a blaring alarm clock, an oven timer going off-all these things may be meaningless to those who can not hear.

All school districts should provide the necessary funding to reduce the size of elementary school classes. Studies indicate that having fewer students in a classroom enables teachers to provide more attention to their students. Smaller classes also allow more individualized instruction for each child. It follows, too, that fewer students generally means fewer disruptions and behavior problems. Teachers also benefit from smaller classes. They don’t have to devote valuable instructional time to disciplining unruly pupils. Not surprisingly, statistics show that students who learn in reduced -size classrooms score higher on standardized tests.

[46~48] 신문의 칼럼 내용에 대한 두 사람의 의견을 읽고, 다음 물 음에 답하시오.

The column you wrote yesterday gave a very one-sided view of TV violence. I agree that there is a lot of violence on TV, but you only have to open the newspaper, turn on the radio, or look out of your window to see that violence is a way of life. TV shows just reflect that reality. Many parents don’t want to face it, but the world today is a lot different than it was when they were kids. Our streets, and our school-yards are full of violent people. The best way to prepare young people to face the world is to show them what it’s really like. TV does this. TV can also help young people to overcome the prejudices that can lead to violence. Television brings people of every culture, religion and race into others’

living rooms.

I thought your recent article on children and TV was very interesting. For years, newspaper columnists have criticized TV programs. Often, they don’t think about television as a positive learning tool. Neither do you! I’ve used TV in my classrooms for years, and it has helped make learning a much more interesting experience for my young students. In my view, TV can be used as a tool for anti- violence and pro-learning. When used in the right way, it can even speed up the learning process. I use TV programs to teach geography, science, and even reading, and my students’

higher test scores prove that this strategy is working. In short, .

[49~50] 다음 글을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.

(A)

Inherited physical and mental traits alone do not determine what an organism becomes. A person’s environment, or surroundings, affects his or her hereditary traits, strongly influencing whether and how these traits develop. For example, research has shown that mental stimulation can raise a child’s intelligence level. In conclusion, despite genetics, we still have some ability to influence what we will become.

(B)

Mental traits include general intelligence-a basic mental ability that influences the capacity to learn-and aptitudes in art, music, mathematics, languages, and other fields. Obviously, people are born with certain mental traits. However, scientists do not agree on whether such traits are entirely inherited or are partly the result of other factors that we do not yet understand.

(C)

Traits that an organism inherits from its parents can be both physical and mental. In pea plants, seed color, seed shape, and plant height are physical traits. Some common physical traits in humans are eye color, hair color and texture, skin color, general body shape and size, and blood type. Many abnormal conditions and diseases are inherited, including hemophilia, color blindness, and sickle cell anemia.
