But people with milder physical disabilities, which are many types of disabilities, are in the blind spot of benefits and support, unlike those with severe physical disabilities. Through the user understanding survey, I found not only the physical discomfort of people with mild physical disabilities, but also the psychological discomfort such as social stares.
Background
Although not actually used, this means that there is a need for mobility aids. A new proposal is needed from a design perspective on how to use mobility aids according to their needs.
Market Research
Depending on the type or degree of the disorder, the use or non-use of mobility aids and the device to be used are different. The background of this study is that the majority of people with physical disabilities are people with mild physical disabilities and use mobility aids according to the degree of disability.
Research Question
People with mild disabilities who are in wheelchairs use assistive devices, crutches and walking sticks. The aim of this study is to identify the needs of people with mild physical disabilities and propose a new design for assistive mobility.
Understanding Target User
It is also active in improving the awareness of disabled people and changing related policies (노구뉴스, 2019). Interviews were conducted to determine the image of micro-mobility and experiences with mobility aids and aids for easier movement of persons with mild disabilities.
Persona & Concept Generation
When she works, she usually sits, so the discomfort caused by the disability is not great. Due to the discomfort of the legs, she looks for videos that teach her the movements that suit her. In Figure 4, weekdays and weekends are separated at the top left and the time of the scene is shown.
The main image of the scene is an image that shows the situation and is expressed by the person's gaze. The scenes of the scenarios can be checked in appendices and this content is in tabular form (Table 3). I eat while watching the next episode of the drama I've been waiting for on Netflix.
When using public transport, she did not want to cause inconvenience to non-disabled people or to be aware of the view of the surroundings. Based on the key word of a life that is not different from the life of non-disabled people, I intend to move away from the typical form of the wheelchair and propose a new form of mobility assistance such as micromobility.
Design Development
Improvement is needed because the rear wheel is in a state where it cannot follow the steering of the front wheel due to lack of detail. By using the sensor at 4 points with a small gap in the seat, it is possible to recognize that the center of gravity on the user's upper body has shifted. The rear wheel was used as a swivel wheel so that it could follow the steering of the front wheel.
Type B is a method in which operation and direction are controlled according to the pressing hand by applying a switch to a part which may be an armrest of the seat. For this system, the shape and line of the touch bar is similar to the wheel of a real wheelchair. The upper end of the seat supports the user in the position where the user's waist begins.
Increasing the height of the backrest gives the user a feeling of comfort and stability. There are lights on the front of the footrest and on the back of the seat, and there is ambient lighting on the manual switches.
User Evaluation
In order to actively express the participants' opinions in the middle of the test, I asked the previous four questions as a small interview. So the parts of the electric skateboard that can control the wheel with a wireless remote control are attached to the bottom of the mock-up. The test was conducted in the order of general explanation of the test, collection of personal information, test procedure and small interview.
In Figure 28 I can compare the sitting position based on the height of the test participant. However, the third woman who is 170 cm tall and men who are 170 cm tall or more reduced the angle of the legs to less than 85 degrees and expressed discomfort in the legs. The size of the footpeg is not small, but as the height increases it means that the position of the footpeg needs to be moved more forward relative to the front main wheel.
The discomfort and anxiety of the lower backrest, mentioned by all participants, is a representative example of the limitations of mock-up implementation. Stability when getting off and on the ramp, adjustment of the footrest and the difficulty of the touch lock button when steering were mentioned.
Design Process Summary
This chapter summarizes the Method & Design Process chapter as a whole and shows the result of the micro-wheelchair that was derived from it. The control method was specified and the interaction between the wheelchair and the user was considered. In user evaluation, there was a need for structural changes in relation to the height and a simple and intuitive control method, so that refinement was improved.
Micro-mobility looks comfortable, but the high speed looks dangerous, and it is difficult to drive because of the balance. For a life that is not different from that of non-disabled people, I move away from the typical wheelchair form and continue the design concept with a new form of supporting mobility such as micromobility. The design concept is inspired by micro-mobility such as segway and hoverboard, and is intended to be expressed in a light and active image.
After that, the process of ideation and 3D data is carried out to create a modern shape and an intuitive control method. Through the semi-working model, I was able to see the convenience of each part size, the stability of the product, and the intuitive scale of the control method.
Output
-the mobility seems pleasant, but the high speed seems dangerous, and it is difficult to ride because of the balance. Based on the user, there is a power button on the far right side of the seat. This switch is located on the underside of the protruding area at both ends of the armrest, with ambient light on the same side.
To move forward, the user taps the touch lock button once and sweeps the hand-swept switches forward with both hands. To change the speed, adjust the steps with the speed control knob on the left. To change direction, press the touch lock button and sweep the hand-swept switch down with one hand.
According to the persona scenario, examples of outings and leisure trips were expressed using Keyshot and Adobe Photoshop. It was made as small as 20% of the actual size with an SLA 3D printer.
Refinement
The range of disabled people is wider and more diverse than non-disabled people would expect, so we need to see them from a wider perspective. When we talk to the actual target users, they are not very different from non-disabled people, but they are aware that they are disabled. They had physical and psychological discomfort on the border between disabled and non-disabled.
Their mental discomfort, like the social gaze they feel in everyday life, was creating a wall with the non-disabled people. In this study, therefore, it is most important to blur the boundaries between disabled and non-disabled. Although designed for the disabled, the design that can accommodate non-disabled people can also alleviate the mental discomfort felt by the environment.
Thus, in the design of mobility aids, micro-mobility used by non-disabled people was used as a motif. In this way, even mobility aids for the disabled can express more active images through design, not passive images.
