About the Korea National Park Service…

Since its foundation in 1987 as an organization exclusively dedicated to the management of Korea’s national parks, the Korea National Park Service (KNPS) has been playing the roles of preserving and protecting the precious national park resources and has been doing its utmost to preserve the health of the national parks’ ecosystems and provide safe and convenient services to visitors.

Jirisan National Park was designated as Korea’s first national park in 1967. It includes Cheonwangbong (1,915m), the third highest peak after Baekdusan and Hallasan in the Korean Peninsula, and other high peaks such as Banyabong and Nogodan. It is also home to renowned Buddhist temples such as Hwaeomsa, Ssanggyesa, and Silsangsa. The beautiful Seomjingang (riv.) flows to the South Sea through Gurye and Hadong along the foot of Jirisan (mt.) The Asiatic black bear restoration project has been ongoing since 2002.

Seoraksan National Park is regarded as having the best landscape and the most beautiful autumn foliage in the country. The area is divided into Naeseorak in the west, Namseorak in the south, and Oeseorak, which covers the area towards the East Sea, with Daecheongbong (peak 1,708m) at the center. Bongjeongam Hermitage (1,224m), which keeps Buddha’s sarira, and Baekdamsa (temple), where a monk named Han Yong-un once stayed, are also situated in the park. A cable car service is operated in the Seorakdong area.

Baekdudaegan and National Parks Songnisan National Park is famous for Munjangdae (peak 1,054m), on which diverse valuable cultural heritages are located, including Palsangjeon Wooden Pagoda, a stone lotus basin, and twin lion stone lanterns. The park also has a number of beautiful valleys including Hwayangdong, Seonyudong, and Ssanggok. The emblematic feature of this park is Jeongipumsong, the pine tree upon which King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty conferred an official ‘second grade’ position.

Songnisan National Park

Gucheondong Valley of Muju, located in Deogyusan National Park, is renowned for its long and unspoilt valley, while the area near Jeoksangsan (mt. 1,029m) is the perfect place for historical and cultural exploration activities as well as hiking and taking in the magnificent landscape. Also, Deogyudae Campsite is an ideal destination for those who seek recreational activities in the woods as it offers about 500 of camping grounds, caravans and fully furnished tents.

Baekdudaegan National Parks Odaesan National Park is divided into the Woljeongsa area, which is crammed

with cultural heritages, and the Sogeumgang area with its beautiful valleys strewn with strange-looking rocks and stones. The woodland path lined with 200~300-year-old firs at the entrance of Woljeongsa (temple) retains its ideal scenic beauty throughout all four seasons, while the national treasures kept in Woljeongsa and Sangwonsa (temple) add to the pleasure of a visit to the park.

National Road No. 6, which is connected to Sogeumgang area adjacent to the East Sea via the Jingogae (pass), is a good driving itinerary for those wishing simply to enjoy the brilliant scenery.

Woraksan National Park is much appreciated for its beautiful scenery in perfect natural harmony with Chungjuho (lake). Yeongbong (peak 1,097m), overlooking the lake, looks very beautiful under the light of the moon. The park contains the Mireukni Temple Site, whose elegantly beautiful standing stone Buddha and five-story stone pagoda are related to a legend about Prince Maui, the last prince of the Silla Dynasty. The three valleys of Songgye, Seonam, and Yongha are also famous in this area.

Sobaeksan National Park contains the scenic beauty of the highland area running from Birobong (peak 1,439m) to Yeonhwabong (peak 1,383m), where the national astronomy observatory is located. A colony of about 3,800 Rigid- branch yews (200~800 years old) is designated as Natural Monument No.

244. The many national treasures housed at Buseoksa (temple) make this park the best place for exploring the region’s nature, history and culture. The national treasures include Muryangsujeon, a stone lantern, a seated clay Buddha, the mural painting at Josadang, a three-story stone pagoda, flagpole supports, and woodblocks dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty.

Rising in the heart of the Baekdudaegan, Taebaeksan (mt.), which is the sacred mountain of the nation, was designated as the 22nd national park in 2016. It also serves as the cradle of life for the southern part of the Korean Peninsula by being the source of Hangang (riv.), Nakdonggang (riv.) and Osipcheon (stream) in Samcheok. The mountain embraces rich cultural heritages such as Cheonjedan, the altar for heavenly rituals of thousands of years; and Geomryongso, the origin of the Hangang (riv.). It also boasts diverse ecological heritage including a large habitat of wildflowers along the ridge between Geumdaebong (peak) and Daedeoksan (mt.); Manhangjae (pass); a colony of rigid-branch yews near Janggunbong (peak); and Baekcheon (valley), the world's southernmost natural habitat of Manchurian trout.

Dadohaehaesang National Park

1,596 Jewels Scattered across the Sea

The name Dadohae literally means ‘a sea with many islands’ and there are indeed more than 1,760 islands in the South Sea between the cities of Yeosu and Mokpo.

Within Dadohaehaesang National Park itself there are about 350 islands including Heuksando, Bogildo, Cheongsando, Geomundo and, most notably, Hongdo, the entirety of which has been designated as a natural monument. Broad-leaved evergreen trees usually found in warm temperate zones grow well in those islands due to the mild oceanic climate, while the colonies of evergreen trees at Mira-ri on Soando (island), Elegance female holly on Yejakdo (island), and Thunberg’s bay- tree on Gwanmaedo (island) have all been designated as natural monuments.

The name of the park, Hallyeo, is the combination of the first syllables of the two most famous places in the region, Han (Hansando Island) and Yeo (Yeosu City).

Pristine Coastline National Parks Taeanhaean National Park extends from Hakampo Beach to Yeongmok Port, along the stretch of rias coastline, and contains fine beaches of Sambong, Yeonpo, and Mongsanpo, and many tidelands. In particular, Sambong and Gijipo Beaches feature unique scenery of coastal dunes.

Taeanhaean National Park

Stories of the Sea Embracing the Sun

Byeonsanbando National Park is divided into two areas: Oebyeonsan, which stretches to the seashore, and Naebyeonsan, which extends towards the mountain. In Oebyeonsan, there are sea caves and Chaeseokgang (cliff), which create an amazing sight resembling stacks of many thousands of books. At Gosapo Beach, there is an evergreen pine forest as well as a wide tideland. In Naebyeonsan, there are about ten mountains rising to a height of around 400m, including Uisangbong (508m), Ongnyeobong, Gwaneumbong, and Sinseonbong, and the colonies of Horned holly, Thunberg’s bay-tree, Box- leaved holly, and Miseonnamu that are designated as natural monuments.

Gyeryongsan National Park may be regarded as an urban national park as it is situated near the city of Daejon and its mountain features are not very rough.

Three famous temples, Gapsa, Donghaksa, and Sinwonsa, are located in the park. Gyeryongsan (mt.) is also well-known for its outstanding feng shui qualities (feng shui is a theory of divination based on topography).

Top 100 Wonders of Korean National Parks (Gyeryongsan) Jayeonseongneung Gyeongju National Park is the only historical national park in Korea, and was the second park to gain national park status after Jirisan National Park. It consists of eight areas including Tohamsan (mt.), which is home to Bulguksa (temple) and Seokguram (grotto), the most dazzling gems of Korea’s ancient Buddhist culture, and Namsan (mt.), which is commonly referred to as an “open-air museum”. The park contains around 1,900 species of animals and plants, as is scattered with numerous historical sites and cultural heritages including some 700 ancient tombs of kings and nobles of the Silla Dynasty, Bulguksa (temple), Seokguram (grotto) and Gameunsa (temple) Site.

National Parks in the City Chiaksan National Park is divided into the Guryong, Bugok, Geumdae, and Seongnam areas along the boundaries between Birobong (1,288m) and Hyangnobong (peak). The forest around Seongnam-ri, which is largely composed of deciduous broadleaf trees that are typical of the country’s temperate zone, has been designated as a national monument. The Daegok Campsite and various nature trails are located in the beautiful forest and valley in the Guryong area, while the auto-campsite in the Geumdae area is the perfect choice for family groups.

Bukhansan National Park

The Spirit of Nature Flowing through the City

Bukhansan National Park is divided into the Bukhansan area and the Dobongsan area by Uiryeong (pass). The former area includes Baegundae (peak), Mangyeongdae (terrace), and Insubong (peak), while the latter has Seoninbong and Jaunbong (peak). The park is featured the Guinness Book of World Records as the park with the largest number of visitors per unit area, with more than 5 million people visiting each year. The park also has a number of traditional Buddhist temples with a high cultural value including Doseonsa, Jingwansa, and Mangwolsa, and diverse relics related to Bukhansanseong (fortress). Bukhansan Dulle-gil (trail), which opened in 2010, is highly popular with everyone from young children to the elderly and people with disabilities. The various Dulle-gil paths help promote sustainable use of park area by leading visitors away from challenging highland areas to lowland areas.

Hallasan National Park

Travel Back into the Mists of Time

Hallasan National Park is famous for Baengnokdam, a crater lake formed by a volcanic eruption at the peak (1,950m). The park’s thick natural forest is home to around 1,800 species of plants, and presents a magnificent view of the vast grassland. About 60% of the park area has been declared a natural monument as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserves.

Dubbed ‘Mother Mountain of the city of Gwangju and Jeolla namdo’, Mudeungsan (mt.) is an integral part of Honamjeongmaek (mountain range) and was designated as Korea’s 21st national park. Featured among its spectacular sceneries are many columnar joints, such as Seoseokdae and Ipseokdae, which have formed near the highest peak and talus slopes that are commonly found all over the area. The mountain also serves as a venue where Gasa (poetry of the Joseon Period) and modern culture go in harmony with nature as it brings together nature, human, culture and health.

A Treasure Mountain

Naejangsan (mt.) has long been regarded as one of the eight most magnificent views in the Korean Peninsula. The many deciduous broadleaved trees create brilliant sights with their verdant splendor in spring and their burnished autumnal hues in fall. The mountain was named ‘Naejang’, which literally means ‘hiding something inside’, because many wonders lie hidden among its peaks and slopes.

Gayasan National Park

Wisdom of the Ancient Sages

Gayasan National Park, located on the boundary between Gyeongsangnam- do and Gyeongsangbuk-do, includes a number of famous peaks such as Sangwangbong (1,430m), Duribong, Gitdaebong, and Namsanjeilbong.

Gayasan Mountain has long been regarded as one of the Ten Great Scenic Sites or the Eight Views of Korea. In particular, Haeinsa (temple), a Dharma Treasure Temple, is home to Tripitaka Koreana, which has been designated as a Memory of the World. The depositories where the collection is stored is called Janggyeong Panjeon, which has also been named a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Hongnyudong Valley presents a magnificent view from the temple.

Wolchulsan National Park is the smallest national park in Korea. Plants typical of warm temperate zones, including camellias and Red-wood evergreen oaks, and flora generally found in temperate zones, such as Oriental cork oaks and Korean stewartias, grow together in the park. The impressive statue of a seated Buddha, carved on the rock 700 meters above sea level, and measuring 8.6m in height, is designated as a national treasure. Of the temples located in the park, Dogapsa (temple) is said to have been built by the National Preceptor Doseon, and Muwisa (temple) was built here in 875.

Jusanji (reservoir) near Jeolgol Area is the most popular destination among visitors to the park due to the unique harmony of the beautiful sceneries, where weeping willows plunge their roots in the gently meandering stream. In addition, the Yaksutang area is famous for the Dalgi Mineral Spring.
