ABSTRACT

As higher education began to expand rapidly, the government has encouraged universities to upgrade the infrastructure. Most students prefer hostel facilities as high-security levels are offered in tertiary institutions. Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) acts as a tool that provides feedback to improve building performance. The feedback from the student perspective will help the university to improve the accommodation facilities provided for another user. Thus, this paper aims to study post-occupancy evaluation (POE) of hostel building in a public university.

The problem of the study is specifically concerned with the poor condition of hostel building due to overcrowded students in the building, difficulty in maintaining the building and lack of knowledge on management skills. While the objective is to study post-occupancy evaluation (POE), to identify the level of student satisfaction toward hostel accommodation provided by the university and to identify the significant factor that influences performance and occupancy in hostel. The scope of the study would be public university students in Sarawak consist of UiTM and UNIMAS students. The methodology adopted for the study was the quantitative research method consisting of a questionnaire survey. Structured questionnaire survey involving open-ended questions and close-ended questions used to conduct the survey. The respondents for the study were selected through a stratified random sampling approach. It is expected that the findings can improve the quality of facilities at a public university.
