CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion

This thesis grew out of the desire to shed light on the creative characteristics of Al-Imam Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā and the methods through which he implemented his creative skills to determine the concept of the purification of the human soul to convey his message to the society and the Ummah. It also aimed to explore and examine the contributions of Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā in establishing the concept of purification of the human soul through his works. The study and analysis of this thesis suggest the following outcomes:

1- Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā held a creative personality that was manifested through his life and works:

• According to Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s biography, he showed eleven creative traits as follows: Fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, sensitivity to problems, redefinition, objectivity, intuition, commitment and inner motivation, intelligence and open mindedness.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s creative personality was evident in the domain, which he was focused on and showed great interest in. His creative traces appeared in his works through the following traits: Fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, sensitivity to problems, redefinition, objectivity, commitment and inner motivation, intelligence and open mindedness.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s creativity in his works was also found in his selection of titles (the topics and lexical choices) and narrations, as well as in the way he introduced each of his books.

2- Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s work is based on a comprehensive scholarly methodology:

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā holds a unique scholarly personality that was formed by his father and numerous teachers in various fields of sciences.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā composed his books according to a theme-based approach, which enhances the research of the topic.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā involved a variety of sources within his works such as, Qur’an interpretations (tafsīr), ascetic books, literature, poetry, …etc.

• Asceticism is the dominant theme in Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s works.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā dealt in leniency concerning the degree of Hadith narrations mentioned in his works, similar to the method used by Hadith scholars.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s personality is represented in his works through his methodology and selection of narrations. Comments and explanations are occasionally used.

3- Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā succeeded in establishing a methodology for the concept of purification of the human soul through his works:

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā established a methodology for the purification of the human soul through his long educational experience and contact with the people of his society and his environment.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s methodology of purification is thorough and comprehensive.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā based his methodology on the doctrine of Islam and the implementations of the virtuous ages.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s methodology of purification included two levels: the individual and the societal.

• Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s methodology of purification is based on three main principles: belief (al-ʿaqīdah), morals (al-akhlāq), worship and social dealings (al-ʿibādah wa al-muʿāmalāt).

Recommendations

According to the research and outcomes of this thesis, the researcher recommends the following:

• To carry out more in depth research in the field of purification of the human soul through Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s works, as this was not possible due to the limitations of the thesis.

• To analyze every narration related to the purification of the human soul in detail and in relation to other related sources.

• To conduct further studies on other personality traits and positions held by Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā such as, Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā as a teacher and an educator.

• To make additional investigations about Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā’s contribution in the fields of economy, politics, poetry, good manners and Qur’an interpretation.

• To make a comparison between Ibn Abī Al-Dunyā and other scholars to reveal other aspects of his creativity and methodology in purification.
