MIDA is playing a bigger role in developing the industry ecosystem by driving VR and AR in the local entertainment and talent development (TVETs) scenes. Since its inception in 1996, the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has been at the forefront of Malaysian aerospace research. The facilities available at the Department of Aerospace Engineering include dedicated laboratories for wind tunnel testing, propulsion and power systems, and material fabrication and structural testing.

A key asset in UPM Aerospace's arsenal is its UAV test area and runway, located in the hills of Puchong, Selangor. As we approach the year 2020, it has now been almost twenty years since the department first embarked on an adventurous journey to become a major player in the study, research and commercialization of UAV products and services. As the global UAV/drone industry has grown exponentially, the Department of Aerospace UPM has managed to ride the same wave of success that other similar organizations around the world have capitalized on.

Many do not know the history of why the Department of Aerospace Engineering was located in an agricultural area many years ago. In short, the vision of the Government and the Prime Minister to enhance the capabilities of advanced aerospace technology led to the birth of the Ministry as announced in the Malaysian Aerospace Blueprint 1997. Shortly after the runway was commissioned, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA ), now known as Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM), was invited to the official UAV flight demonstration.

Since then, the Department of Aerospace has logged thousands of hours flight testing all types of UAVs and drones – some were research vehicles built by.
