The Ionosphere, a region of the ionised upper atmosphere that affects radio wave, was used by Tesla in 1899 to transmit energy wirelessly over long distances. He transmitted extremely low frequency waves between the earth and the ionosphere.
In 1901, Marconi bounced of the ionosphere, radio signals of 500 kHz across the Atlantic from Cornwall to Newfoundland. It was in 1902 that Heaviside proposed the existence of the Kennelly-Heaviside layer of the ionosphere, and this was followed by the discovery of some of the electrical properties of the ionosphere by Kennelly. There was a lull in ionospheric related research activities until 1990, when studies on HF propagation in the equatorial region, was initiated at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This was followed about less than a decade later by investigations made on the total electron content over Malaysia using GPS receivers. The ionosphere has shown and proven to be a good laboratory for space science especially more so in Malaysia with the existence of the equatorial anomaly.
