INTRODUCTION

A research fund was granted to the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) and Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) by the Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia (CIDB) for a project entitled ‘Waste Minimisation and Recycling Potential in the Construction Industry’. Funding of this research project is in line with CIDB’s vision towards Good Environmental Practices for the Construction Industry. Basically, the project aims to produce standards and guideline documents as well as examples of best practices to minimise and recycle construction waste. FRIM’s role in the project is based primarily on waste minimisation and recycling of wood material. Towards this end, a one-day workshop will be organized in order to create awareness among stakeholders on the possibility of producing useful products from construction wood waste. While recycling of construction wood waste will be the main focus of the workshop, relevant subjects related to timber properties and utilization will also be highlighted.

OBJECTIVES

This workshop is jointly organized by FRIM, CIDB and LESTARI with the following objectives:

• To highlight the importance of timber in local building construction.

• To identify factors related to wood waste minimization and recycling within the construction industry.

• To highlight method of production of usable products from wood waste in the construction site.

• To provide a platform for discussion on feasible and quality products that could produce from construction wood waste.

TARGET GROUP

Contractors, developers, planners, policy-makers engineers and academicians as well as research- ers in fields related to the construction industry.

REGISTRATION FEES

Registration fees of RM 150.00 will cover workshop material, lunch and refreshments.

Payment should be made either by cheque of postal order or bank draft in favour of Director General FRIM. All payments should be sent to Workshop Secretariat.

DATE AND VENUE

The workshop will be held on 10 May 2005 at Palm Garden Hotel IOI Resort, Putrajaya.

Recycling of Wood Waste SCOPE AND TOPICS

1. The used of timber in building and construction industries.

2. Status of wood waste utilization.

3. Products derived from construction wood waste and their economic analysis.
