Nutrition Care Process (NCP) Workshop By Ms Tonia Reinhard, MS, RD
Tonia Reinhard is the Director of the Coordinated Program in Dietetics and a Senior Lecturer at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She is also the Course Director for Clinical Nutrition at the School of Medicine at Wayne State and Adjunct Faculty in nutrition at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Tonia is currently serving on the Governor’s Expert Committee on Childhood Obesity and is a past President of the Michigan Dietetic Association (MDA).
Tonia has worked as a clinical dietitian and done outpatient counseling in hospital and physicians’ offices. Her previous positions include Manager of Clinical Nutrition at Crittenton Hospital and Director of the MSU Expanded Nutrition Education Program in Macomb. Tonia has authored several publications ranging from technical papers to articles for consumers, as well as three books. In addition to publications,
Tonia presented lectures to many diverse groups including dietitians, nurses, teachers, physical therapists, medical students, industry trade groups and community groups. The topics have included nutrition and disease, nutrition in childhood, vitamins and health, and gastrointestinal disease and nutrition.
This Workshop will provide an overview to the NCP, with discussion of each of the four steps, i.e., Nutrition Assessment, Nutrition Diagnosis, Nutrition Intervention, Monitoring and Evaluation. In addition to didactic presentation, participants will work in groups to develop appropriate PES diagnostic statements (problem/etiology/signs and symptoms). Participants will also work on case scenarios, actual patient cases from the University of Michigan NCP Development Team.
Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to
- Describe each of the four steps of the NCP
- Use NCP Nutrition Diagnoses terms to develop PES statements
- Apply the NCP model to patient cases and generate ADIME format documentation

9:00 – 10:00 am : Overview of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) 10:00 – 11:00 am : Working Through the 4 NCP Steps
11:00 – 12:30 pm : Writing Optimal PES Statements 12:30 – 2:00 pm : Lunch Break
2:00 – 2:30 pm : Documentation in the ADIME Format
3:00 – 4:30 pm : Applying the NCP: Group work on Case Scenarios and Group Presentations
4:30 pm : Closing Session & Tea Break
