Objective

To expose aspiring technopreneurs to the latest tools and techniques for efficient need identification, concept generation and practical

implementation of ideas into a functional prototype.

Approach

This workshop is the first one in a series on innovation and management. The workshop

consists of lectures and guided team-based exercises followed by demos of rapid prototyping tools. Participants will be grouped by the organizer in teams and will concentrate on multidisciplinary (engineering / science /

medical / business) teamwork.

Synopsis

The first 2 days of the workshop aims to provide an accelerated overview of the Biodesign Process: a systematic and design- thinking approach to needs validation, invention and implementation of new biomedical technologies.

Through executing case studies based on real-world clinical needs, the workshop will help participants appreciate the needs identification/ validation phases as well as the concept generation/selection phases of the Biodesign Process.

The last 2 days of the workshop on electronic & mechanical rapid prototyping will complement the above sessions.

Outcomes

• Knowledge in need and concept screening (to minimize the risk in high-tech ventures)

• Familiarity with rapid prototyping tools (taking a concept to the level of a fully functional prototype)

• Forming a network of experts and possible co-founders in future new ventures.

• An official certificate of completion.

Main Facilitators

Ruey Feng Peh, B.Eng.,

Fellowship Head for the Singapore- Stanford Biodesign (SSB) Program

Ruey is an inventor on 45 US patents and applications, and the winner of both the Silicon Valley Boomers and the Stanford E- Challenge business plan competitions.

Currently Ruey is the Fellowship Head for the Singapore-Stanford Biodesign (SSB) Program, a medtech innovation training program adapted from Stanford University.

As Fellowship Head, Ruey runs the Asian phase of the SSB Fellowship and directs the training program of the SSB National University Singapore-Nanyang Technology University Class. Concurrently, Ruey is an Entrepreneur-In-Residence for the A*STAR Healthcare & Lifestyle office where he proposes and manages medtech projects towards commercialization.

Anthony Tang, M.D., Stanford Biodesign Fellow

A Specialist General Surgeon at the National University Health System (NUHS) in Singapore, Dr. Tang is a lecturer at the National University of Singapore.

In 2011, Dr. Tang was awarded the inaugural Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Fellowship and is active in the field of medical device innovation both as an inventor and as a mentor to budding entrepreneurs.

Pearline Teo, Ph.D., Stanford Biodesign Fellow

A Research Fellow at the Molecular Engineering Laboratory (A*STAR, Singapore), Dr. Teo designs next generation DNA-based biosensors. In 2012, she was awarded the Singapore-Stanford Biodesign Fellowship—training in the invention and implementation of new biomedical technologies.

Pearline has a strong interest in game-changing technologies that straddle the boundaries of Biology, Chemistry and Engineering, and in the application of these tools to bench and bedside.

About SSB

The Singapore-Stanford Biodesign (SSB) Program is a partnership between Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore, and Stanford University.

Modelled after the renowned Biodesign Program from Stanford, SSB’s mission is to train and nurture the next generation of medical device innovators for Singapore &

Asia.

Registration

Due to the adopted pedagogical approach based on teamwork, the number of participants is limited to 30 only. The organizer will group the candidates in multidisciplinary teams, ideally consisting of persons with either technical, management and medicine background. A nominal fee of RM 2500 will cover lunch, refreshments for all four days and a copy of the handouts.
