MIFF, EFE
As usual, STIDC did not miss the opportunity to participate in both shows, this time opening information booths on its roles as a leader and catalyst of the timber industry in Sarawak. The booths also displayed samples of Sarawak's commercial timber and timber products, Sarawak's timber and timber products trade statistics, as well as information on Sarawak log legality verification and the Tanjung Manis Halal Hub. Throughout the shows, numerous trade inquiries were received from international industry players, particularly for plywood, MDF, particle board, logs and sawn timber.
Judging at the sales performance of the shows, STIDC urged the furniture entrepreneurs in Sarawak particularly its vendors to participate in the similar events in future in order to showcase their products and designs to the international market. Towards that end, it is vital for the local furniture entrepreneurs to work hard and invest in branding and marketing. Timber industry in Malaysia is expected to generate RM53 billion by 2020 and with the support of the industry players this target is achieveable.
It is essential for the local furniture entrepreneurs to work hard and invest in branding and marketing. The local industry players should take advantage of the regional and bilateral free trade agreements to expand their markets. The players in the industry must support the government's policies and activities and always strive for the best.
Likewise, they should take advantage of the various promotional activities carried out by the concerned authorities including MATRADE, Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysian Timber Industry Board and Malaysian Furniture Promotion Council, to penetrate the international markets. Despite the concerted efforts of the authorities to create a resilient furniture industry, the future of this industry also depends on the players in the sector. To achieve this goal, industry players must support government policies and activities and always strive for the best.
WOODCARVING
Wood carving is an art that reflects the characteristics of the individuals and communities that expressed themselves through their artwork. In Sarawak, this fine art comes in various motifs, often representing the varied composition of the state's population and cultures. The motifs are always floral based on real plants or simply imaginative renderings of "awan larat", which is an arrangement of motifs.
The famous flowing floral patterns representing the head of Sarawak's largest bird-hornbill can also be seen on the carvings. The government has taken note of this priceless heritage and is joining forces to take this tradition to the next level. The annual National Craft Day, which has begun for the tenth consecutive year this year, is one of the initiatives taken to promote wood carving activities, encourage local wood carving enthusiasts and expand the market.
STIDC, which is the leader and catalyst of the wood-based industry in Sarawak, supports the government's efforts to strengthen the wood-cutting industry from Japan and Korea.
