INTERVARSITY CONFERENCE OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS’

SOCIETIES (ICESS 2003)

On 18 October 2003, a group of representatives from engineering societies in various universities gathered at The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia to attend the 3rd Intervarsity Conference of Engineering Students’ Societies (ICESS). A total of 48 engineering students from 7 universities attended the conference. These representatives were from University of Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Multimedia University (Cyberjaya), Multimedia University (Melaka), Universiti Tenaga Nasional, and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa. This year, representatives from Sepang Institute of Technology, Klang, were invited as observers for this event.

The conference started at 10.00 a.m. Sdr. Ngeow Yen Wan thanked the students for their participation and expressed his appreciation to the Engineering Society of University of Malaya for their efforts in co-organising the event. Ir. P. E.

Chong, an IEM Deputy Vice President and IEM’s representative to the conference, then gave a welcoming speech to the participants.

The conference proceeded with a presentation by Sdr. Yau Chau Fong on the G&S Section activities and G&S Section official website. This was followed by presentations from each respective engineering society. The presentations mainly focused on society objectives, activities carried out and upcoming projects. This was the session where students got the opportunity to create an awareness of their society among other universities. Each society was represented as follows:

• Lee Chee Meng (PKUM, UM)

• Hew Kah Mei (PEMAJU, UPM)

• Afzan B. Mohd Anuar ( PEMATRA, UKM)

• Choo Chee Wee (Engineering Society, MMU Melaka Branch)

• Beh Jiang Meng ( Engineering Society, MMU Cyberjaya Branch)

• Elaine (SIR, UNITEN)

• Abdul Basid B. Shahul Hameed ( ENGINIUS X, UIA Malaysia)

• Ngeow Yen Wan ( on behalf of IEM-UiTM Student Section)

Reported by: Sdr. Ngeow Yen Wan, G&S Section

After the lunch break, Sdri. Kee Wai Fun conducted the ice-breaking session, where participants were required to solve questions and create a model using the limited materials provided. This session was extremely lively and funny, as students were divided into different groups and had to learn to work efficiently together within a short time. Points were given based on the ability of participants to work together, financial planning, the product (model), and the final presentation.

presented. The students were asked to recruit participants from their universities for events such as netball, volleyball, chess, table tennis, tennis, badminton, street soccer, bowling, basketball, squash and football. The Engineering Games will be held from 19 – 21 December 2001 at University of Malaya.

The final event was the selection of the host for EG 2004. The conference agreed to award the honour of hosting EG 2004 to the IEM Student Section of UiTM. UiTM representatives had indicated their willingness to become hosts for EG2004, and had demonstrated this willingness by conducting a trial UiTM Engineering Games from 13 – 14 September 2003.

The conference ended at 4.30 p.m.

Next on the itinerary was a discussion session between the IEM G&S Section committee and the participants. One of the outcomes of the discussion was the agreement that IEM G&S Section will send out a newsletter to each student through e-mails collected from each engineering student society.

A team led by Sdr. Eric Eow, on behalf of the organisers of the Engineering Games 2003 (EG 2003), then introduced the EG mascot, Iekey, to the students. A question and answer session was held and gifts were IeKey, the mascot for the Engineering Games 2004, and memberrs of the organising commitee, informing the participants about EG 2004
