Module engagement, my achievement!

Jerell Gregorio

I

n the middle of the month of March 2020, a lockdown was announced due to the COVID 19 virus and we were shocked and unprepared. We do not know what to do when the school announced that we will be having an online set-up, since we don’t have yet internet connection during that time.

I was having a hard time with it. It was very unfamiliar. I still tried my best to keep up with the situation and I became quite

familiar in the last two quarters, since I am using it every week.

Now, that I have been using it for more than two years, I am already acquainted with this online learning. I also prepared a routine for my online set-up every week. I even improved my spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction. I can easily ask for help from my teachers in accomplishing

Jerell Gregorio, a Grade 4 pupil, attends his class where not only the competencies and knowledge are instilled, but also values that are necessary for the total development of the Lasallian learners as functionally-literate citizens in their communities.

All these are happening through De La Salle-Lipa and its unrelinquishing efforts to deliver quality education.

Making connections amidst borders

Isaiah Giovann S. Quinto

B

rene Brown once said, “Connection is why we’re here; it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” Truly, human interdependence is essential in our lives, as this paves the way for new relationships and a better outlook. In proportion to this, establishing relationships with others can also be applied in education because we can have more meaningful learning opportunities.

This has been actualized in De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) last February 16 and 18 through the Class Connect Program, an activity which was participated by Grade 5 English classes and students from Mentari Intercultural School Jakarta (MISJ). Its objective is to help students realize that we can still be connected to other people through virtual collaborations and interactive activities.

Ms. Jelly Baroja, Ms. Queeny Ann Dabon, Mr. Genesis Javellana, and Mr.

Remmuel Santiago from MISJ were the guest teachers in the said program. They taught an English lesson virtually to DLSL Grade 5 Students. The lesson that

they taught was about cause-and-effect relationships. On the other hand, Ms. Marilyn Camitan from DLSL was the guest teacher and taught an English lesson virtually to MISJ Grade 5 Students on February 16, 2022.

It has been observed that the students who participated really had a wonderful experience. Every student involved in the activity had been active and cooperative and had shown enjoyment. Moreover, the teachers were lively and discussed the lesson and objectives clearly. They were also kind, calm, and excellent just like our teachers here in De La Salle Lipa. The guest teachers were also well-prepared and creative. The students were asked to read about a story called “The

Two Brothers” and after that, they played an online game about it.

Indeed, the DLSL online set-up is living up to its tagline “Borderfree Education”, as manifested in this activity.

Students are still given the chance to meet and interact with other people even from other places, regardless of the borders.

Truly, opportunities are limitless if we continue finding ways.

The Class Connect Program with Jakarta Teachers had been fun, enjoyable, and memorable. As the adage goes, if there’s a will there’s a way, and the collaboration between DLSL and MISJ has proven it.

Teachers are all willing to help students when they are having a hard time answering the modules. They will find extra time just to meet our needs, especially in the most confusing topics of our lessons. That is why we love our teachers and we all admire them for their hard work and patience in assisting us.

Say it loud, say it proud with PAASCU Team

Jerell Gregorio

T

hat day was so unforgettable when my homeroom adviser, Ms. Fe Lajara, announced that I was chosen to be a PAASCU (Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges & Universities)

representative of all Grade 4 students together with our Vice President for an Interview with PAASCU Accreditors as part of the first PAASCU Virtual Program Accreditation on November 11 and 12, 2021. PAASCU is the service organization that accredits or quality assures academic programs of its member’s schools and does institutional accreditation.

Before the visit, I attended an orientation with other level representatives about an overview of the topics to be discussed during the actual interview, as well as the important things that we need to know about PAASCU accreditation. I felt nervous for several days before the scheduled orientation. During the orientation, the Principal and the Assistant Principal commended us for representing the Grade School students and motivated us to keep up the good works as students.

After the orientation meeting, I became more anxious on what are the possible questions to be asked for the interview.

I started asking myself, "How many interviewers will there be?" and "How long will it take?". To better prepare myself for the interview, I prayed for God’s guidance and wisdom to ease the nervousness that I feel.

During the interview, we were greeted by six interviewers and introduced themselves to us. We were asked about the services of our school, the teachers’ techniques in teaching, and other relevant information about our school and personnel. Each one of us was given a bonus question which we were able to answer amazingly. The meeting ended with a meaningful prayer. I could say that this experience made me feel proud of myself because I successfully represented our grade level.

e La Salle Lipa Grade School was recognized as the Overall 2nd Runner- Up Awardee during the 13th Sci-Math Interschool Challenge sponsored by the De La Salle University Integrated School - Laguna. The event was held via Zoom.

Thirteen students successfully partook in the Arts Workshop entitled “Learning Different Art Styles and Techniques (An Online Poster and Painting Workshop)”.

Another group of 13 students fruitfully participated in the Sci-Math Forum with the theme, “Building 21st Century Skills Through Math”.

It was an event not just for students but for teachers as well. Nine MAPEH teachers attended the Arts Workshop while twelve Science and Math teachers joined the Sci- Math Forum.

Second year of online learning experience

M

y first-year experience of online learning with my classmates was a bit unusual because of the adjustment from face-to-face learning to online distance learning. But now in our second year, I can happily say that we all got used to it through the guidance, support, and encouragement of my family, friends, and teachers.

Hannah Zoey U. Baña

The best part of online learning is the fun, educational and interactive games like Kahoot, Quizziz, Quizlet, Nearpod, Wordwall,

Gizmos and many more. There are also experiments and interesting activities

that are incorporated in the modules.

In our synchronous online learning, we can meet our

classmates and teachers online and discuss

lessons. We are also encouraged by our teachers to be active and participative in class engagements. During asynchronous learning, we are also given opportunities to communicate with our teachers through email or canvas inbox to ask questions or to seek for assistance in our module activities and assessments.

School days in De La Salle Lipa, even online, are super fun. As a young Lasallian student, school days are the happy times in a young person’s life. I hope next year, even face-to-face or online learning, it will also be enjoyable, like this school year.

Horizon

Unity in CAPSTONE journey

O

ver 250,000 words exist in the English dictionary, and if I were to pick a word from those myriads to describe the CAPSTONE journey that was made, it is unity.

One can imagine how this project has turned from a seemingly hellish, rickety rollercoaster ride into a hushed, smooth, glider-like experience. Moreover, an

unexpected turn from what some anticipated was also palpable.

Initially, it’s like the end of the beginning. From two to three group members attending the first virtual meeting with muted or nonparticipation of ideas at all made me feel frustrated and unmotivated.

However, with the drive given by our mentors; it reminds us that facing challenges and navigating paths enhance one’s

resilience, and more importantly, knowing how one can overcome obstacles, learn from struggles, and benefit from mistakes lay a solid foundation for success in later life. This is true.

As a group leader, my continuous effort of understanding one’s weaknesses and strengths, providing easy tasks, and daily reminders through private messages have prompted my group members to openly share helpful ideas along the way.

In the end, all of them contributed which made us one of the groups to finish ahead

our CAPSTONE.

In conclusion, unity is something that cannot be achieved instantly because one has to work hard to gain success.

With this journey, my most valuable learning is not only the activities that the CAPSTONE presents but also the virtue of patience and determination to unite my groupmates in reaching our goal successfully, making it one of the best memorable group activities I have experienced in my life.

Lastly, I am delighted to have been on this journey with my classmates and I am looking forward to a healthier relationship with the same or other group members of the CAPSTONE project in the years to come.

With this journey, my most valuable learning is not only the activities that the CAPSTONE presents but also the virtue of patience and determination to unite my groupmates in reaching our goal successfully, making it one of the best memorable group activities I have experienced in my life.”

Online learning safety tips

D

ue to the threats of the pandemic, the teaching transition from face-to-face classes to online classes was inevitable, and it comes with its own unique set of challenges. Living in this way forces students to view their learning practices differently. One area that will seem more difficult to regulate is online safety. While in school, some aspects of the internet and technology safety are controlled by the teachers or schools’ technology departments. Security measures and privacy walls requiring student and teacher compliance are put into place. When doing online classes, teachers and schools don’t have as much control and need to take some precautions to keep all students safe.

While learning online, students won’t be able to control everything. Educating ourselves with basic online safety protocols will be beneficial to everyone.

Here are some online safety tips to keep in mind:

1. Be careful in using social media.

The pandemics threat made the world inclined on using social media to connect with everyone, it is also the easiest and the cheapest way to communicate with teachers and classmates. But be sure you are adhering to safety policies on social media use at all times. It’s essential to know what you can and cannot share. Never share your information on social media or elsewhere on the internet. This same set of privacy might go along with sharing students’ faces in a photograph.

2. Be careful of how you share information with your teachers and classmates.

There will be crucial information we need to share with our teachers and classmates. As we know, sometimes, social media is used to bring awareness to an announcement or serve as a reminder of something important. It is important to keep anything that follows the privacy of ourselves behind a wall. This information should be housed in your LMS or school email. Keep virtual conferencing links, meeting IDs, and passwords private. Keeping this information private will help keep unwanted visitors out of video meetings with teachers and other classmates. It’s also important to reiterate to

yourself the importance of password safety.

3. Always use your school-provided email address

Never use your personal email addresses for communication. It is important to use school-provided email addresses to ensure online safety. One of the most common security breaches is email hacking which can lead to the hacking of your other accounts.

4. Choose your app wisely

There are certain school-approved apps and platforms designed for educational use. This is a great place to start when considering what platforms or applications will be best for students. Be careful when using non-educational tools as they may not have the necessary privacy settings to protect student data. Just because something exists in the app store, it doesn’t mean it’s safe.

It is important to be aware of potential risks with any free or paid platform. For example, TikTok is a popular app used by students and adults, but there are security risks to consider before using it.

While we can’t always control what programs our students use at home, we can educate ourselves and carefully select what we use in the educational setting. If you’re not sure a program is safe for use, start by consulting with your parents, they always know what to do.

Being aware of and practicing online learning safety is the only way to prevent

GS concludes SY with a virtual culminating activity

Bernadeene Denise Orcena

O

n June 10, 2022, the Grade School Department had their Virtual Culminating Activity facilitated by the different homeroom advisers from 9:00 to 10:30 in the morning.

To add excitement to the activity, there were games that gave students opportunities to earn prizes. A select number of students per class also prepared special performances to showcase their talents and to entertain their classmates.

Following the performances were Opening Remarks from the Integrated School Principal, Dr. Haidee Angeles. The key takeaway from Dr. Haidee’s message was that time flies, and we must make sure that we manage it wisely. She also reminded us that there will always be a proper time and place for everything.

Ms. Kristine Anne Dimaculangan, the Associate Principal for Academics, delivered another message, reminding us as students to always keep the values we learn from the Lasallian Institution.

She also gave an overview of the new Hybrid Modality Learning: a combination of limited face-to-face and online classes which will be offered for the School Year 2022-2023. After the inspirational words from Ms. Kristine, was another message from the Grade School Assistant Principal, Ms. Rose Cornejo. In her message, she quoted Dr. Seuss “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

Lately, things have been difficult for students and teachers alike.

I believe that this culminating activity was a perfect way to end our challenging school year. Personally, the activity gave me hope and motivation. It inspired me to continue working hard as a student because as a message from the program said, “You must choose to do good.” The teachers, school administrators, and stakeholders ended this school year with high spirit and excitement for the next school year.

risks. They will always be present, but teaching students how to manage harmful online learning situations and content will ensure they are best-placed to benefit from their time online, free from harm.

of the internet

The magic

Harry Gerard L. Perez

W

e may not have been born when something called the internet came into existence but we have carved out unique magic for its evolution.

The Internet was first introduced in 1983 and its exciting development reached the

21st century. We are fortunate to live in an online generation where Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, Facebook, Tiktok, Amazon, and others have become home or global events.

Thanks to the internet, our daily lives become much easier compared to the times we do not have.

Decades ago, people had to stand in line to send cards, buy anything in stores, withdraw or deposit money in banks, enroll in schools and universities or travel long distances just to attend a regular physical

class.

But with the advent of the internet, everything

becomes easier and our precious time is saved.

It is amazing how the internet brings

in information from different web

groups. In theory, the internet acts as a network that connects all our resources.

The process of communicating with others online may sound complicated but it is very simple.

Initially, packets and messages we send are split along our route to help process the larger

number we send. Each server has a unique address called an IP address, like our home address, which allows the system to be accessed by other systems connected by an Internet protocol.

When these packets are routed, a communication device that assists the transmission of data packets between computer networks reads the details of the specified IP address and sends it correctly to reach its destination by following certain rules called TCP, a set of protocols designed for the Internet to receive data from one network device to another.

Following these agreements, the data is delivered in the best possible way without any issues. When these packets reach the recipient's path, they are assembled according to their instructions and this is how one computer receives the message in seconds.

That's magical, isn't it?

The magic of the internet aims to give people light and live freely as our world advances technologically. However, in our daily hustle and bustle especially in this time of epidemic, without the internet, there can be a lot of fear and chaos, and the world will be down.

Our global economy would be buried to death as industries collapsed and unemployment increased. It is like dropping a huge Jenga tower! If we lose the internet we will all go back to the old days when we learned to thrive in our lives. Everything seems tiring that take time to get used to.

I am a child! I am vaccinated! I am protected!

Jerell Gregorio

T

he Department of Health (DOH) finally announced that vaccination for children age 5 to 11 years old is already available and the vaccine brand to be used is Pfizer.

My mother did not hesitate to get me vaccinated, but she asked me first if I wanted to and I immediately said yes because I know that it is for my own good and for others. I got my first dose of vaccination on February 25, 2022, Friday at Manila.

After the vaccination, I feel a little pain on my left shoulder whenever I move it, nonetheless the pain only lasted for two

days.

Then, I needed to wait for three weeks to get my second dose. I was thankful because when I got my second dose, I did not feel pain on my left shoulder anymore unlike my first dose. I even attended my Homeroom VCE and was congratulated by my adviser for having my second dose.

As a child who is already fully

vaccinated, I still believe that whenever we are, all of us need to follow rules and safety protocols for the protection of others and for ourselves.

“...all of us need

to follow rules

5 things to know about COVID-19 vaccination for children

1

COVID-19 VACCINATION FOR CHILDREN IS SAFE.

Before recommending COVID-19 vaccination for children, scientists conducted clinical trials.

Then, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective, and authorized it for emergency use in children.

2

GETTING VACCINATED CAN HELP PROTECT CHILDREN AGAINST COVID-19.

Vaccinating children can:

• Prevent children from getting seriously sick if they do get COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccination continues to protect children against severe disease, including hospitalization.

• Keep children safely in childcare and school and participating in sports, playdates, extracurricular activities, and other group activities.

3

CHILDREN MAY HAVE SOME SIDE EFFECTS AFTER COVID-19 VACCINATION.

Reported side effects are like those experienced after routine vaccines. Side effects may affect your child’s ability to do daily activities, but they should go away within a few days. Side effects are more common after the second shot. Some children have no side effects.

4
