GOD’S WORDS FOR TODAY (Jn 10:31-42) The Holy Gospel according to St. John

The Jews picked up rocks to stone Jesus. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?" The Jews answered him, "We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God." Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, 'You are gods"'? If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and Scripture cannot be set aside, can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." Then they tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power.

He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained. Many came to him and said,

"John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true." And many there began to believe in him.

Reflection:

The word of God is life and power for those who believe and accept it as God's word for us. Jesus shows us the way to walk the path of truth and holiness. And he anoints us with his power to live the Gospel with joy and to be his witnesses in the world. Are you a doer of God's word, or a forgetful hearer only?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you invite each of us by name and you call us “friends”. Lead us to show as much respect and care for others as we would like them to show for us. Amen.

MISSION VISION

“To be a sign of faith as an excellent educational institution, sharing in the Lasallian mission of teaching minds, touching hearts and transforming lives.”

Last Days of Saint de La Salle

A great famine hit France in 1709 and caused St. de la Salle to reestablish his Novitiate at Paris. Here again the Brothers endured almost indescribable privations, but by a miracle of Providence, they contracted no debts and were not stricken by death or disease.

In 1711, our Saint visited all the houses of his Institute and on April 10, 1714 arrived on Paris. Our Saint realized that he was aging and that there was a must need for someone to take his place as superior of the Brothers. Accordingly, on May 18, 1717, Bro. Bartholomew was chosern to succeed Saint de La Salle. Freed from cares or worries which always accompany superiorship, our Saint passed the remainder of his days in self-effacement, mental prayer, obedience and mortification.

John Baptist de La Salle died on Good Friday of April 7, 1719. His last words were “I adore in all things the will of God in my regard.” He was sixty-eight (68) years of age. His precious remains were interred in the church of Saint Sever, from which they were translated to the Chapel of St.

Yon in 1734. They are now in the Mother House in Rome. At the time of his death, there were already two hundred and nineteen (219) brothers and twenty three (23) houses.

Why is Holy Thursday sometimes called "Maundy Thursday"?

The word "Maundy" is derived from the Latin word mandatum, or "mandate."

This word is used in the Latin text for John 13:34:

"Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos."

Or, in English:

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you."

Holy Thursday is thus sometimes called Maundy Thursday because it was on this day that Christ gave us the new commandment--the new mandate--to love one another as He loves us.

What happens on Maunday Thursday?

The bishop celebrates a "Chrism Mass" with his priests (usually).

The Mass of the Lord's Supper is held in the evening.

At the Mass of the Lord's Supper, the priest (often) performs the washing of feet.

The Tabernacle is empty and the Eucharist is put in a place of repose.

The altar is stripped.

Why is the Mass of the Lord's Supper significant?

Careful attention should be given to the mysteries which are commemorated in this Mass: the institution of the Eucharist, the institution of the priesthood, and Christ's command of brotherly love; the homily should explain these points.

April 9 - Araw ng Kagitingan

Araw ng kagitingan (“Day of Valor”) is a national public holiday in the Philippines, celebrated on the 9th of April. The day is also known as “Bataan Day”.

Araw ng kagitingan commemorates the fall of the Bataan peninsula during World War II after months of fighting between the Philippine and American armies against the invading Japanese. The united Philippine-US army, depleted of food, medicine and ammunition, was forced to surrender to the Japanese on the 9th of April, 1942. The now prisoners of war consisted of 68,000 Filipinos and 11,796 Americans. The Japanese, unprepared for the large number of prisoners, decided to move them by foot from Bataan to another base located 140 kilometers (90 miles) away in San Fernando.

On this forced trek, known as the “Death March of Bataan”, many prisoners died due to starvation, disease, dehydration and exhaustion on their way to San Fernando. Many prisoners were also murdered along the way. However, the prolonged defense of the Bataan peninsula hindered the Japanese army’s progress, enabling the Filipino and US forces to prepare for subsequent battles and ultimately win the war against the Japanese.

(3)

This gruesome period during the war is used as a reminder of the courage tenacity and willingness to sacrifice to the point of death by the Philippine and American forces. It also is a day to remember Filipinos who continue to fight for freedom on behalf of the Philippines.

FROM THE OVCAD – INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES:

Cont… Hemophilia Complications

Complications of hemophilia may include:

Deep internal bleeding. Bleeding that occurs in deep muscle can cause your limbs to swell. The swelling may press on nerves and lead to numbness or pain.

Damage to joints. Internal bleeding may also put pressure on your joints, causing severe pain. Left untreated, frequent internal bleeding may cause arthritis or destruction of the joint.

Infection. People with hemophilia are likelier to have blood transfusions, increasing their risk of receiving contaminated blood products. Blood products became safer after the mid-1980s due to screening of donated blood for hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The risk of infection through blood products also has decreased substantially since the introduction of genetically engineered clotting products (recombinant factor concentrates).

Adverse reaction to clotting factor treatment. In some people with hemophilia, the immune system has a negative reaction to the clotting factors used to treat bleeding. When this happens, the immune system develops proteins (known as inhibitors) that inactivate the clotting factors, making treatment less effective.
