THE HOLY GOSPEL (Mt. 7:7-12)
First Week of LENT
The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew,
Jesus said to his disciples, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.
”Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”
Reflection:
“Ask … seek … knock …” Jesus assures the disciples of the Heavenly Father’s desire to answer prayers. He says that all one must do is ask and it will be given, seek and one will find, knock and the door will be opened. Moreover, one should never weary of asking, seeking and knocking.
Prayer is an expression of men and women’s deepest desire to reach God. It is through prayer that God will be found, will give and will open himself to his children. Jesus emphasizes that to pray is to cast all doubts to God who knows how to give good things to those who ask him.
Prayer:
Let us pray …Father in Heaven, give us the confidence / to, ask, seek and knock. Amen. St. John Baptist de La Salle…….Pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts………… Forever!

The Difference Between Fasting and Abstinence
Fasting and abstinence are closely related, but there are some differences in these spiritual practices. In general, fasting refers to restrictions on the quantity of the food we eat and on when we consume it, while abstinence refers to the avoidance of particular foods. The most common form of abstinence is the avoidance of meat, a spiritual practice that goes back to the earliest days of the Church. http://christianity.about.com/od/holidaytips/qt/whatiseaster.htm

FROM THE OVCAD – INSTITUTIONAL HEALTH SERVICES:
Continuation… Oral Health Month: A window to your overall health Step 4: Brush and floss to remove plaque.
Everyone should brush at least twice a day. It's even better to brush three times a day or after every meal. In addition, you should floss at least once a day. These activities remove plaque, which is a complex mass of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. If plaque isn't removed every day, it can turn the sugars found in most foods and drinks into acids that lead to decay. Bacteria in plaque also cause gingivitis and other periodontal diseases. It's important to brush and floss correctly and thoroughly. You need to remove plaque from all sides of the tooth and where the tooth meets the gums. If plaque is not removed, it can lead to gum problems and cavities.
Step 5: Limit snacks, particularly those high in simple sugars, and eat a balanced diet.
Every time you eat, bits of food become lodged in and around your teeth. This food provides fuel for the bacteria in plaque.
The bacteria produce acid. Each time you eat food containing sugars or starches (complex sugars), your teeth are exposed to these acids for 20 minutes or more. This occurs more often if you eat snacks and the food stays on your teeth for a while.
These repeated acid attacks can break down the enamel surface of your teeth, leading to a cavity. If you must snack, brush your teeth or chew sugarless gum afterward.
A balanced diet is also important. Not getting enough minerals and vitamins can affect your oral health, as well as your general health.
Step 6: If you use tobacco in any form, quit.
Smoking or using smokeless tobacco increases your risk of oral cancer, gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth decay. Using tobacco also contributes to bad breath and stains on your teeth.
