The term ASEAN Wave first appeared in the inaugural issue of the ASEAN-Korea Journal in 2019. In the open forum article of the ASEAN-Korea Journal, Yang Woo-yeon, senior manager of CJ ENM, and Hon. To open a more objective discourse on the ASEAN wave in the context of regional integration studies, this research looks at the state of the intra-regional.
What are the implications of the state of ASEAN media in Netflix for the realization of an ASEAN community. Once a panoramic view of the state of ASEAN media in the region is provided and analyzed in relation to ASEAN community building, then this research has achieved its purpose. In the context of the ASEAN, this research attempts to connect global media flow studies with the concept of regional integration and tries to explore the current state of ASEAN media on the popular SVOD platform Netflix.
The emergence of Netflix in Southeast Asia presents several opportunities and challenges for the development of the region. Following a similar approach conducted by Lobato (2019), a quantitative catalog analysis of the ASEAN Netflix catalogs is a credible starting point to understand the state of ASEAN media landscape in the age of Netflix.

The coded Southeast Asian titles can be found in the appendix (see Appendix A), as well as the data on the Top 10 most watched movies and TV shows in the Netflix catalog of the 6 ASEAN countries from July 4, 2021 to May 1, 2022 (see Appendix B). Identifying the frequency of the titles in the Top 10 list is crucial in this research as it will create a starting point for identifying the audience's viewing preferences. The audiovisual history of the ASEAN region is closely related to and influenced by decades of Western colonialism in the region. Knowing the percentage of Southeast Asian titles available across Netflix's catalogs within the region is essential in developing this research. The Netflix Top 10 data in the ASEAN region can be found in the appendix (see appendix 3).
Indonesian subscribers preferred to watch US-made titles, as US films were often in the top 10 on the platform (see Figure 11 below). The table below lists Southeast Asian titles that may make the top 10 list, which is often dominated by US film titles (see Table 6). The following table (see Figure 14 below) shows how Southeast Asian titles fared on Netflix in the Philippines, with notable presence of local TV series “The Promise: Season 1” and “A Love to Last: Season 1” where both series can stay on the list for 23 weeks or 18 weeks, respectively.
