This study focuses on the
writing
problems of the freshmen of the Collegeof
Education in Tarlac State University through error analysis. The 232 students were asked to write three paragraphs: narrative, expository, and descriptive. The data collected from thesewriting
outputs underwent three stagesof analysis.
First, they were tabulated and tallied toidenti$
the most frequent error of the students, which was verb tense. Second, the errors were described and classified according to their linguistic category and surface structuretaronomy. It
showed that most of the students' errors werein
grammatical level and they were resultsof
misformation, blends, misselection, addition, andmisordering.
Finally, the errors were explained by stating the rules violated and the learning strategies used by the students in committingerors.
Students' misanalysisof
some concepts,overgeneralization of rules, overlooking of co-occurrence restrictions, and incomplete application
