LEARNING
OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
LEARNING GUIDE
Data needed (and SOURCES)
Learning activities
Expected output 1. Describe the institution’snursing
service using different theoretical perspectives.
Students to select a theory/theories (e.g. the General Systems Theory, Scientific Management, etc.) and use it as a framework in getting to know (describing) the SLMC Nursing Service.
OUTPUT: A write-up on the SLMC Nursing Service that is informed and guided by the selected theory of organization and management.
Caution: Collect only the data that are relevant to the learning objectives.
2. Give specific examples of how the hospital’s philosophy and core values guide management of the nursing service
Based on the hospital’s (Nursing Service’s) philosophy and core values—students to do observations, interviews and review of records (as permitted by the institution) to determine how these (philosophy and core values) are translated into concrete actions, policies and programs by nurses/Nursing Service.
GUIDE: First prepare a list of topics,
data/information to collect, but it is better to formulate an observation checklist and interview schedule. The limits should be set by the
institution’s policies and not by the students’
inability to properly collect data and/or lack of adequate preparation.
OUTPUT:Reflection paper on the institution’s philosophy and core values and how nurses (front liners and managers)
5 3. Assess the role of technology in
the management of the different nursing units of the institution
Observations and interviews with managers should be done to assess the role of technology in the management of the different nursing units.
Suggested preparation: Read on the topic and prepare data collection tools – checklist and interview guide.
OUTPUT: Written summary and discussion of the results of data collection. The paper should be explicit on the usefulness of technology, elaborate on the advantages/strengths and identify what issues were not addressed.
4. Prepare a tool to assess a selected nursing unit using the structure-process-outcome.
(PRIOR to practicum) From a review of literature—
both theoretical and empirical, prepare a tool that will be used to assess a selected nursing unit (determine ahead of time). Group the items into three categories/dimensions: structure, process and outcome.
During the practicum, use it (do a pilot test of the tool) to identify deficiencies and/or improvements that need to be made.
OUTPUT:A revised and improved assessment tool 5. Identify the characteristics of
excellent nursing services that are present (or absent) in the
institution
OUTPUT: A list of characteristics of excellent nursing services that were observed in SLMC.
These characteristics should be based on, or supported by theoretical and empirical literature.
6. Identify policies and practices in the nursing service that promote patient safety.
Review policy manuals or interview managers re:
policies and observe nursing practices that promote patient safety.
OUTPUT: List of policies and practices that promote patient safety
7. Describe the processes
involved in ensuring the quality of human resources involved in caring for patients.
Interview a manager or astaff competent to talk about the topic.
OUTPUT: An adequately detailed description of the processes involved in ensuring the quality of
human resources involved in caring for patients.
Students should also add their reactions or reflections on what they described.
6 8. Identify good practices related
to the different management functions—planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.
OUTPUT: From observations and interviews, students should come up with a list of good
management practices. These practices should be adequately described and discussed.
9. Discuss how the nursing leadership promote or facilitate the realization of the institution’s philosophy and core values and the achievement of the nursing service’s goals and objectives.
PRIOR to practicum: Review the relationship between leadership and management. Prepare a data collection guide to answer these questions (among others): What are the differences in the behaviors/actions of leaders and managers? What are the leadership qualities and behaviors did you observe? How does leadership impact on
management?
Day 1: Review and analyze the institution’s and the Nursing Service’s philosophy, core values, goals and objectives.
How are these translated to action, policies and programs?
By interviewing the nursing staff and managers and by observing patients and their families; nurses and other co-workers’ and managers – their actions, interactions, behaviors, the students should be able to figure out the role of nurse leaders in mobilizing and harmonizing different stakeholders to realize the institution’s philosophy, core values, goals and objectives.
OUTPUT:A reflection paper on what the students observed (re: leadership among nurse managers).
Was there congruence in the leadership and
management behaviors of nurse managers? Yes or no, students need to elaborate on their answers.
