T he fry of p e n ae id sh rim p s a r e th e p o s tla rv a l o r e a r ly ju v e n ile s ta g e s of th e life c y c le . T h e re a r e four g ro u p s of sh rim p fry th a t o c c u r in sh o re w a te r s in c o n sid e ra b le ab u n d an c e . T h ese m ay be q u ick ly id e n tifie d by th e ir g e n e ra l p ig m e n ta tio n p a tte r n s (F ig. 1). The n um ber of p ig m e n t c e lls on th e six th ab d o m in al s e g m e n t (h e re c a lle d PSAS) is an im p o rta n t and e a sily a s c e r ta in e d c h a r a c te r for id e n tif ic a tio n .

They a r e th e la r g e s t (1.4-3.1 mm in c a ra p a c e le n g th CL, a v e r a g e 2.6 m m ) a m o n g all sh rim p fry and c a n e a sily be picked o u t b e c a u se of th e ir d ark b ro w n -re d s tre a k a lo n g th e e n tire body form th e tip of th e in n er a n te n n u la r fla g e llu m to th e tip of th e te ls o n . The ro stru m is sle n d e r and s t r a ig h t or v e ry slig h tly c u rv e d , 0 .4 -0 .5 x CL in le n g th . PSAS is g r e a te r th a n 13, d e n se and c o n tin u o u s.
