PROGRAM ON HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH AND POLICY REFORM
The HERPR program submitted proposals to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) for possible research grants. The program is also working on a policy brief for the Department of Health on understanding the supply and demand of medical professionals in the Philippines.

The data analysis found a robust relationship between nursing licensure exam pass rates and variables such as school size, school type, location, year of establishment, and student-faculty ratio. Results reveal that the number of Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) annually is not enough to meet the demand of the basic education sector in the Philippines.
Proposed Activities for July to December 2018
The paper, titled School Licensing Exam Performance and the Engineer Shortage in the Philippines, found that small schools in each of the four engineering fields (civil engineering, electronic engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering) fared much worse than larger schools, and that the student-faculty ratio was reversed commensurate with passing the licensing exam. The Program on Data Science for Public Policy aims to build capacity of University of the Philippines (UP) faculty in data science applied to challenges in public policy and governance.
Data Science for Public Policy
In this regard, the Program strives to build and engage a faculty community and encourage the pursuit of problem-oriented interdisciplinary research using high-level quantitative analysis. The program is convened by UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Research and Development and UP Institute of Mathematics Professor Fidel R. Nemenzo, D.Sc., and co-convened by Professor Clarissa C. of the UP College of Mass Communication.

Yet, after the end of the Cold War in the late 1980s, Marx was considered irrelevant and relegated to the margins of popular discourse. In the aftermath, there was renewed interest and discussion about the works of Karl Marx. In the Philippines, while developing its own national road safety plan, the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan (PRSAP, the various stakeholders of the advocacy) agreed to a target of 20 percent reduction in fatality rates for road traffic fatalities.

For the AltDev programme, the focus will be on proposals for the recovery of public services and bringing them under public control and management.

The Philippine government's debt burden has long been a barrier to achieving social and human development in the country. This workshop, held on April 11, 2018 at the UP CIDS Conference Hall, aimed to finalize an operational framework for the debt audit that is consistent with the agenda of the Freedom from Debt Coalition and the Program on Alternative Development, and in line with the interests of the Filipino people. The lecture, which was held at the UP CIDS Conference Hall, featured Dr. Malay's assessment of the various Marxist movements in Paris, Prague, Vietnam and the Philippines.
The second alternative practices workshop was organized with the Department of Community Development of the UP College of Social Work and Community Development, CAMP Asia, the Igting Organization and Bantay Kalusug Pampamilya.

Ariate also presented on Panitikan Bilang Armas Pandigma (Literature as a Weapon of War): A Survey of Philippine Proletarian Literature (2000 to 2010), which delved into proletarian literary production that “can be studied from the standpoint of its material inequality and its historical given certain contradictions from which they arose” and appear as “unevenly resolved conflicts in the text.” The second workshop on alternative practices in the Philippines was held on June 29 and 30, 2018 at the UP CIDS Conference Hall. AltDev's Project on Alternative Practices led a workshop cum writeshop, building on the previous Alternative Practices Workshop held in May 2018.
The workshop focused on enabling participants from NGOs and POs to write documentation about their alternative practices using a participatory writing exercise.

In this lecture, Professor Ginsburg spoke about his forthcoming book, How to Save a Constitutional Democracy, which he co-authored with Aziz Huq. In her book, Ginsburg presented the causes of democratic erosion and offered solutions that can save constitutional democracy.

Marasigan worked on the status of madrasah schools and educators in Lanao province, while Madam ISP, together with the UP Institute of Islamic Studies (UP IIS), the Research Association for Islamic Social Sciences (RAIS) and the Embassy of the United States States (USA) in Manila, launched a program titled Suara Muslim Initiative for Leadership Empowerment (SMILE) on May 30, 2018 at the Virata Hall, UP Institute of Small Scale Industries. About a hundred people participated in the event, including Muslim lawmakers, leaders, experts, academy members and stakeholders.

Plan future activities and areas for further collaboration to improve the quality of madrasah education in the Philippines;. 1st international workshop on publishing opportunities on "Islam in Southeast Asia" and conference on the role of the state, education, community outreach, responsible media and religio-cultural dialogues in combating violent extremism. The purpose of the workshop and conference is to produce book and journal article publications aimed at improving Islamic Studies scholarship in the Philippines.
The program is also targeting Palgrave Macmillan, Brill, Routledge, IB Tauris, SAGE, UP Press, Ateneo de Manila University Press, among others to participate in the book fair.
