JOURNAL OF ENGLISH AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Volume 1 Number 1 JUNE 2022

(3)

The Journal of English and Applied Linguistics (JEAL) is the peer-reviewed, open access, bi-annual journal of De La Salle University’s Department of English and Applied Linguistics. It publishes high-quality research articles in Applied Linguistics, which critically assess existing research paradigms, persuasively connect theory and practice, appropriately utilize contemporary methodologies and techniques, and competently inform policy and practice. The journal gives particular preference for empirically-based and data-driven studies, which exemplify rigor in its review of previous literature, analysis of data, interpretation of results and findings, and provide answers to essential questions in English and applied linguistics. But at the same time, it values papers dwelling on theory, which make novel contributions and generate new ways of theorizing to understand linguistic issues in real-world situations better. It welcomes authorship and collaboration among local and international scholars from Inner, Outer, and Expanding Circles of English whose works are within the target scope of the journal. It invites contributions that provide descriptions of and solutions for the real-world problems of indigenous people, native English speakers in ENL, ESL, and EFL contexts, and ESL and EFL speakers across English circles.

Within the subfields of applied linguistics, JEAL focuses on those which are closely related to (1) language in the classroom (e.g., English for Academic Purposes, language teaching, and learning); (2) language in the society (multilingualism, sociology of language, language attitudes, language ideologies, language planning, language variation, language change, language contact); (3) language in the community of practice (English for Specific Purposes; language in the workplace); (4) language on the internet (internet linguistics); and (5) language and technology (computer-aided language use/teaching/learning).

JEAL welcomes two types of articles:

(1) Theory-based short articles (e.g., synthesis, validation, or classification of a theory; building of a theoretical framework; practical application of a theory, etc.) with a minimum of 4,000 words and a maximum of 6,000 words (including abstract, notes, main text, appendices, and references).

(2) Data-driven articles (i.e., empirical analyses of first-hand data) with a minimum of 7,000 words and a maximum of 8,000 words (including abstract, notes, main text, appendices, and references).

From the Editor

On behalf of the editors and the advisory board members, I am thrilled to announce the publication of the maiden issue of the Journal of English and Applied Linguistics (JEAL) and acquaint the readers with the aims and envisioned personality of the journal.

The Department of English and Applied Linguistics of De La Salle University aspires that the journal will become a repository of outstanding research and scholarship of students, teachers, and practitioners who show an active interest in the advances of knowledge in the field of applied linguistics across cultures and regions in the world. Although it has a generalized content, the journal will give priority to studies touching on investigations related to the language in the classroom, in the workplace, in the society in general, and on the internet, which involves the application of relevant theories and methods in understanding real-world scenarios of indigenous people who are struggling to acquire decent education in remote areas, heritage speakers in diglossic environments, native English speakers in ENL, ESL, and EFL contexts, and EFL and ESL speakers across different English circles.

Initially, it has called on the pool of Filipino researchers and their international collaborators scattered across the globe to make JEAL their platform for the dissemination of advances of knowledge that offer solutions to the issues relating to the micro and macro structures that affect the speakers/learners and the development of languages.

Hence, the maiden issue consists of papers written by Filipino scholars and their international collaborators from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, China, and the Philippines who described the unique contexts of learners and language speakers in ENL, ESL, and EFL contexts.

JEAL is indebted to the Department of English and Applied Linguistics faculty members and the Council of Chairs of the Brother Andrew Gonzalez (FSC) College of Education (BAGCED), De La Salle University, for their wholehearted support. Special thanks are due to the former Chair of our department, Dr. Rochelle Irene Lucas, for supporting my idea to create this journal. Thanks are also due to Dr. Raymund Sison and Dr. John Addy Garcia, previous and incumbent deans of BAGCED, for their unfailing support. My gratitude goes to the two associate editors, Dr. Paolo Nino Valdez and Dr. Shirley N. Dita, and the meticulous reviewers. They are co-gatekeepers of the quality of international publishing as they ensured that only those articles that exemplify high research and publishing standards are recommended for revisions and acceptance. Special thanks to the advisors, Dr. Ariane Borlongan and Dr. Mike Tanangkingsing, who reviewed the proposal I wrote and recommended effective wording.

I also thank Dr. Raymond Girard Tan, DLSU’s Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, and Dr. Jose Isagani Janairo, DLSU publishing house executive publisher, for supporting the launch of this journal. Ultimately, all praises are reserved for our God almighty, who enabled us all to initiate this project.

Leah Gustilo, Ph.D.

Founding Editor-in-Chief
